Air conditioning causing the car to over heat

It seems when i turn on the a/c in my car the water temp begins to get hotter and hotter, it doesn't do this when i don't use the a/c. But not using the A/C is asking alot because the weather here is pretty hot. I was just going to see if anyone else had this same problems and if they fixed it. Please help if you can.

i kno this may seem elementary but have you check your thermostat? i kno if it doesnt open you car will over heat and a/c is a strain on the motor.

does your car get to temp quickly? or what??

what do your gauges say??

is the heat its self an issue?? i wanna tell you that you might be losing your water pump... but you need to keep a close eye on it

You have just got yourself a cooling problem. Prolly just the thermostat. Replace it and see if that fixes it. IF that doesn't fix it, you want to check for flow in the cooling system (mainly the water pump). You do this by disconnecting the inlet hose to the Heater Core (it is the hose that goes from the water pump to the heater core). Turn the car off and disconnect that hose. Turn the car on (make sure you have a drip pan to catch the coolant). If coolant comes out of the hose like water from a garden hose, than your waterpump is more than likely fine. Now, reconnect that hose. Now, you want to disconnect the outlet hose from the heater core (the one right below it). Once disconnected, turn car on and if the coolant comes out like water from a garden hose, than your heater core is good. Now, if the coolant didnt come out of the inlet hose like water in a garden hose, your waterpump is bad. This tends to happen due to the steel blades on it that tend to rust off when proper maintence is not done (coolant flushes). If coolant didn't come out like it should of out of the Outlet hose, your heatercore is bad. Now, if all that checked out fine, than it is time to check to make sure that you don't have a blown head gasket. The best way to do this would be with a pressure tester. Go get a pressure tester, and hook it up to the radiator (take cap off, and tighten tester in caps place). Pump about 25 pounds of air in it. If you slowly loose pressure, than you have a blown head gasket. Contrary to what you may hear, blown head gasket do not always sound like a very loud lawn mower. I have seen cars that sound normal, but have had a blown head gasket. Now, if the pressure test checks out ok, there is only 2 things left to do....

1. Replace the thermostat.

If it still over heats with the new thermostat, take the thermostat out and drive it without it for a day or so. If it doesn't over heat, then you have found your problem..

2. You have a clogged radiator. Replace the radiator (along with upper and lower hoses) and your car should not over heat any more.

Hope this helped!

EDIT:

Forgot to add to this:

another way to check for a blown head gasket would be to turn the car on and take the radiator cap off. If you see bubbles, then you have a blown head gasket.
