I'm pretty sure that Ford recommends 5w20 on the later models and 5w30 on the earlier models, but says 5w20 can be used in the earlier models as well. The 5 is the viscosity cold and the 20 or 30 is the viscosity at normal operating temperature. The 5w20 is less viscous at normal operating temperature, so is supposed to give better gas mileage.

As to synthetic oils, the synthetics are supposed to be oils that are synthesized from smaller molecules, whereas the non synthetic are just a distillation cut of oil. The main difference is the synthetics are only one kind of molecule, but the regular oil is a mixture of many different things. It is claimed the synthetics are more resistant to thermal break down.
