V6 CPU Performance Modification Assessment

Question: Buying a V6, 2002. What is the best way to figure out if any modifications have been made to the engine performane management system in the ship's computer. In a week end test drive, this automatic logged 15 mpg, with "flowmaster" dual exhaust. I am in the Dallas area. Suggestions for shops that can evalaute the car would be most appreciated, if that is the path I need to take to determine any modifications. Car has been lowered with Eibach springs as well.

Thanks,
davigf

If you are looking for mods, take a look at some stock mustangs of the same model and take pics and note differences if necessary. Also, you can take images of the car's engine bay, interior, under neath, and from any and all imaginable angles and post here. I can tell you what has been done.

there are two ways to modify the pcm's programming, the first being reflashing and the second being "chipping". the chipping is the easiest to spot, to do so you will have to remove the negative cable from the battery, remove the passengerside kicker panel, pull the PCM and if installed you will see a 'chip' similar to this attached to the back of the computer. Otherwise you are probably stuck with buying an XCAL to reflash the stock tune, taking it to a tuner to see, or the stealership.

But prior to taking it somewhere I would check and/or replace the spark plugs if you have not already, because this can alter the MPG. Also do you think there is a possiblility that the 'gears' have been upgraded, that would be a reason that someone would want to reflash the PCM?

Thank you for the input. This Mustang has had modifications in suspension and exhaust for sure. The piggy back chip set should be easy to catch. The flow master exhaust has a throaty sound. I think I can hear an exhaust leak in the engine compartment. It is difficult to assess.

Changing the plugs is a great idea. I will also change the oil. The low profile, wide tires probably has an additional negative affect on gas mileage.

I am also looking for a solid recommendation on method for cleaning up scratched up headlamp assemblies. I have been a Ford guy for a long time. Now I own a 94 F-150 with 170K mis and it runs flawlessly. I own a 2004 Expedition. Great on the road, just expensive to move on it. Now, after 30 yrs of driving, I get to own a Mustang. Great car.

Thanks again,
New Mustang Owner, George

I bet this car was built to look and sound fast. To clean the headlights, you will need to spend time and elbow grease with a rubbing compund, polish, and wax (just like paint) to clean it up. I just bought new headlights off ebay...

Buy new headlights off of eBay. Some of them look really nice and they arent too expensive. Im wanting to get a set of black projectors off of eBay.

Thanks for all the help. Ebay has replacements that are reasonably priced. I am sure they are mostly aftermarket, but what will I notice about them that will be different from OEM, other than the low price?

Glass construction as opposed to plastic.

What about those lens things. You can also get those. Or you can also get a black out decal over your lights.

I don't care for the HID look or the blackout look unless the car is black. HID's are a no-no and so are tail lights.

Well, anyone can do whatever they want with their car, but personally, I favor an "anabolic stock" look (i.e. my car)
