draining the tranny fluid

I want to drain/refill the transmission fluid. If I pull the pan, will that allow all the fluid to come out or is there something else that needs to be done to get the fluid out of the whole system including the torque converter?

I obviously want to get as much out as possible. Also, does just draining it (changing the filter and seal too) do the tranny any good? I was told by a shop that I should have it "flushed" by a machine or its not helping anything. That sounds like bullshit to me but Im not a mechanic. Maybe its better but is it absolutely necessary?

This car has 55,000 miles on it and its never been changed.

The last part of this question is where do you put the fluid back in when your all done? I cant imagine trying to put quarts in the dipstick!

pull the pan for the fluid. to get it out of the torque converter, you will have to have the machine to do it. it does help to just change the fluid from the pan. its a refresher and if the trans was worn badly it would help it since it wouldnt shock it with brand new fluid. yes you fill it in the dipstick tube.

thanks for a reply.

I was considering doing it myself. Ive been getting prices and they range from 89 bucks to 149.

with just over 50,000 miles do you think it would be worth it to just drain what I can or do you suggest doing the "machine flush"?

i always just pulled the pan, replaced the filter, and refilled. that is how we did most of our trans services when i worked at chevy. it is recommended to service an auto trans 12k miles or once a year. if you have the moneyand want the machine flush, go for it. i personally would just change the filter and refill.
