Do I have a gas leak?

I took my mustang out for a cross country trip for the first time, after letting my father take use of the car for 2 years. Prior to the trip, I put in a new air filter, fuel filter, changed the tranny fluid and balanced the tires. So far so good, until I tried to fill up the gas tank. It overflowed. The gas nozzle didn't click off, it just kept on pumping when the tank is full and a crap load of gas came out of the tank, inside the rear quarter panel.
I fired up the engine and took off, I went about 70 miles and the gas meter went from full to half empty. I tried to pump some gas at the next service plaza, it again, spilled gas, nozzle didn't shut off automatically. When I used the car regularly 2 years ago, it shut off fine. (my father usually don't pump a full tank of gas, so he doesn't know about this problem). This 2nd full tank of gas lasted longer than the 1st tank (I wonder why). On the 3rd refill, I pumped only 10 gallons, and this time, I didn't notice any spill.
Now, I checked the fuel economic as carefully as I can, it seem to be a little low, about 19-20 mph on the highway. But that might be due to my car being full of stuff and going in mountainous terrain (Penn Turnpike) .
Should I have a mechanic check my car when I get to my destination? Does it sound like I have a leaking gas tank or is it just overfill? (But why would the nozzle not shut up automatically?)

I had a simlar problem ... only i could not really notice the difference but once the smell of gas was coming from the right quaterpanel of the car ... i had a look at it and noticed a pipe tht is connected to the gas tank tht is about 1/3rd of a inch in diameter had been disconnected from the pipe tht was leading to the front end of the car. I put the pipe back in and secured it with a screw clamp, since then everything seems fine.

I dont really know if this will help u but have a look maybe it just might.

Goodluck
