1996 V6 clutch replacement

Hello,

I have a 1996 V6 3.8L mustang with the original T5 transmission.

The clutch recently went out, and i am trying to decide whether i can replace it myself or if i should have it done by a professional.

The main concern i have is getting the transmission out of there, there is a cross bar welded to the exhaust pipes, and i am wondering if the entire exhaust needs to be removed before we can get to the transmission.

This is the first car i have worked on, besides a ford festiva, so i am still a n00b when it comes to this stuff.

Any help would be appreciated, and if anyone has pictures of when they did the job, or knows where to find them, i'd greatly appreciate it.

Thanks.

I advise that you get a haynes manuel. It'll have pictures and a step by step on how to do it.

I have the haynes manual, but it doesn't say anything about this cross bar, or the exhaust at all. Looking at the book, it seems as straight forward as anything, but you get under there, and it's a completely different picture.

I think i may go for it, but can anyone tell me if i will need to remove the dual-catalytic converter y-pipe in order to get the transmission out?
We'd really rather not, because we've had to mess with the exhaust so much, that if we remove that, we might as well replace the exhaust system all together.

I'm sure the manual says to remove the y-pipe to get access to remove the transmission.

my dilemma is that i am in college, and have neither the time nor the money to replace it. I'd really rather not tackle something that is unnecessary, and would like to take as few parts off as possible.

So i guess i am asking, will it make things horribly difficult to leave that y-pipe on there(and the cross bar that connects the two halves of the y-pipe)?

When i get out of school, the car will get a huge make-over, but I'd like to stick with the bare minimum right now.

For now, we are taking it to the shop. I have plans for this car though, so I'll be back with plenty of questions on performance parts.
