I think my starter is going...

Ok so long story short. I talked to my wife the other day and found at that the day before this whine started in the car, the car was at a light and she thought she stalled it so she cranked the ignition 3 times, but the car didn't stall so the engine was already running and there she was cranking it over. So the next day I go out to take the car out (95 Mustang) and there's a whine up near the window on the passanger side. Now, the sound is only there when the car is cold and rarely, when I go to start the car it has a hard time starting, but when it does that and it does start there's no whine. So either it starts right away with a whine or struggles and doesn't so I'm thinking she messed up the starter. What do you all think? Where exactly is the starter on the 95?

Sounds like she blasted the starter gear that engages the flywheel. Get the car up in the air and pull it off and check it. I believe on your car it's on the passenger side, at the rear of the engine, butted up against the transmission bellhousing.

Make sure you disconnect the positive terminal of the battery before disconnecting the starter connections.

When you get the starter off you will be able to see the flywheel teeth with a light. You can spin the motor over by turning the harmonic balancer at the front of the engine with a socket & johnson bar. Turn it clockwise bit by bit as you check each section of flywheel. Easier if you have a friend to turn it for you as you look.

p.s. always use jackstands to support the car while you're under it.

I won't be doing any of this myself as I'm not in any way a mechanic. I do have a brother in law who can take care of this for me. Is this going to be a costly thing to fix?

If it's just the starter, no.

If the flywheel is damaged, yes.

However, these things are designed to where the gear on the starter is a softer material than the flywheel, so normally just the starter gear is damaged. Normally.

Well I'm normally pretty good at diagnosing car issues and I'm rather sure that it's the starter just from the story I was told and what's happening with the car. I'll start with the starter and move on. I appreciate the help.

Engine's stop only in two positions which is why it would only happen part of the time.... sorry but if I had to guess I would say it's the flywheel!
Oh but I would be pretty sure the bendix gear on the starter is also damaged due to being made from a softer material! Had a 300Z at our shop with this condition 2 months ago!

Tell me why if you look at a older flywheel it will only have 2 very worn spots on it? And when I say two spots I am only refering to the flywheel !!
They are natural points for a engine to come to a stop after removing fuel and spark due to compression.

WOW... guess I am the only one who had starter grind on a flywheel that rotated 1/2 turn and had it happen there too, but on the 1/4 turns it's ok.
On a used flywheel it is the first thing I inspect.

If Lasota racing says I am wrong I will listen.... but not from someone who had to pay a shop to tune their car.
