Over Heating Problem?

Well I was driving my car yesterday (not real far) and i noticed that the engine temp guage was starting to go up. Well I figured it was just a little fluxuation but it got up so much that it was touchin the white line right before the red. I was lookin for a place to pull over when it just went back down to normal. So im a little confused. Is the engine getting hot because my fan isnt turning on when it's supose to ( i know the fan runs ) or maybe i just need to change the oil or something. I dunno what to think with this car. Any Ideas?

best idea is to check all fluids and also check the fuses ... if both of those are good then you will want to run the car and turn the AC on all the way cold while the engine is on Im 90% positive that doing this should make the fan turn on, because of how the car is set up ... but just double check the fan works...

after that the next suspect is the thermo ... then the computer ... hopefully things get figured out and you can have the pony on the road again soon

Well I had an over heating problem before and had the radiator fixed and the thermo replaced. And it's not over heating all the way just getting close to and droping back down so i'm thinking there is a sensor or something on there that is actin up and causing the fan not to turn on. The only problem with that is that it was like 60 degrees outside so i mean i wouldnt think it would need the fan. Maybe the gauge is damaged?

let me see if i get it right you were driving and suddenly it heated?

it must be the sensor.. or gauge

cause it's rare for a car to over heat when driving cause there's air going in the engine bay cooling it down and if it suddenly when to cool range in nothing then its the sensor or gauge cause also no way it will cool down in matter of seconds

Turn on your A/C the fan should IMMEDIATELY come on if it does not there is your issue diagnose the electrical problem and fix accordingly.

if thats not it check the coolant level if its low then add some to it. also check for bubbles in the coolant while the engine runs and check for oil in the coolant and check for coolant in the oil. yours showing the signs of a bad head gasket.

if the leak is internal it means that the coolant is leaking into the combustions chamber and into the crank case. this will = white smoke and overheating for no aparent reason.

External leak means it either leaks right out onto the ground or your head is cracked and the engine oil is leaking into the coolant system. this situation = no smoke. with an external leak it wont always leave a puddle because it will evaporate off the engine before it has a chance to drip. you can however usually smell the coolant under the hood.

This sounds most like what it's doing. It was about 50 or 60 degrees out and i was goin about 50 or so. It was in the low cool area and then just started to go up and go just about over the white line before the red and it stayed their a second and then it would just go back down to where it was. It would take it about 10 seconds to move back down.

It would make sense that it is a sensor or something because my car is already an electrical nightmare. What sensor is it and how to do check it? How can i check the guage?
