a higher ratio (4.10:1) means the ring gear has (in ford cases) 41 teeth and the pinion gear has 10 teeth. this will accelerate the car by multiplying torque much faster than the stock 3.27:1 ratio.

These gears will affect your theoretical top speed, but not your actual top speed. You will be pulling harder in higher gears, so you will go just as fast, if not faster, with 4.10s over 3.27s

same reason some people get 4.30:1 instead of 4.10:1. some people think 3.73s get better mpg (they do, but not much), and some people (the smart ones) trap at the top of their top non-overdrive gear in the 1/4 at redline with that ratio.

i.e. i trap at 4500 rpms in 3rd in the 1/4. i redline at 6k rpms. ideally, i would have a gear such as 4.30:1 to trap closer to 5k-6k rpms range. that would net me a lower 1/4 mile time...

a 3.73 ratio will give you less torque compared to a 4.10 or 4.30... it just means that the pinion has to rotate 3.73 or 4.10... times for the ring gear to rotate once... essentially you will loose some top end speed since increasing torque will decrease speed. But for better acceleration i say a higher gear ratio will be fine, but you have to keep in mind that too much torque will just burn rubber and the car will not go anywhere until the tires slow down... it is true that a 3.73:1 will give you better gas millage but only in overdrive like in 5th gear... because you reach like a .75:1 gear ratio in fifth gear with 3.73:1 and if you bump up to 4.30 you get like a .90:1 gear ratio which is really close to fourth gear 1:1, so fifth gear will be something like 4 1/2
