So, Gas Prices Really Suck

What are some tips for getting the best milage. I have a 2001 v6, it's not supercharged, no turbos or anything, just a CAI that I stuck on it cause I figured that would help.

This is my first standard, and I've only had it for 3 months. I taught myself to drive it, so I really don't know much about standards. I was wondering if there are any small things I could do to sqeak out a few more mpg's, like should I put it in nuetral while I'm stuck at a red light, or is it fine being in 1st. When's the best time to shift? I usually shift right before 3,000 rpm's, and if she gets lower than 2,000 rpm's I down shift. I know that the faster you accel the more gas you use up, but I don't think I'm willing to compromise there, after all, if I wanted leave the light like a grandma I'd jut drive a Honda

I'd also really appreciate any mod suggestions, as long as they're not uber spensive. I'm on the road almost 2 hours a day commuting to school and work so much thanks in advance! My car --->

1st off DON'T LEAVE IT IN GEAR AT THE LIGHT! It has nothing to do with the gas mileage but it wears your clutch out like crazy!

But the only thing I can think for you to do is keep the rpms lower. Shifting a few hundred lower will make a world of differance and it might keep you from putting some major wear on your car. You will run into some major problems down the road if you keep that up for very long. I drive it like I stole it all the time but I go through traffic like a granny. But if you won't comprimise I'd say that the only thing you can do is buy a chip and pay for more expensive gas. What octane do you put in your car right now.

I always put the good shit, I never paid attention to the octane number number, but i don't screw around with regular unleaded or plus, I go with the supreme.

So it's better to shift <2,500 rpms?

Also, does it screw anything up if I keep the clutch down a lot. the way people drive around here I have to push down the clutch and get ready to hit the brakes multiple times a minute.... ui was just wondering if keeping the clutch down, or pushing it in a lot messes anything up.

much thanks, I'll def make sure to put it in nuetral while at the light.

Your car is tuned for 87 and unless you have chipped it or have upped the compression, you are throwing money away on more expensive gas.

Using 87 octane instead of 91-93 will definitely help you save a few bucks everytime you fill up.

An underdrive pulley would give you 1-2 MPG and net you a few horsepower at the same time. An X-Cal 2 with a gas mileage tune would also get you 1-2 MPG.

It just wears the clutch out faster.

Stop wasting money on premium gas ................ use the 87 octane

Premium gas is for boosted or high compression engines

or agressively timed ones.

in the order of your clutch, I assume people do tat annoying auto creep a lot in stop and go traffic where you live and this requires you to have the clutch depressed and let it slip a lot(the two worst things to do) To cut down on this you need to do two things 1: when EVER you are stopped or can just coast put it in neutral, your clutch has a limited amount of times it can be depressed, although in the mid/early '90s car companies started putting devices in cars that almost eliminated them from wearing out like this from normal use(unlike many older cars) your car still has a limited amount of times it can be depressed and held down like you state. 2: when in stop and go traffic always leave enough room for you to fully let out the clutch when moving, all cars can quickly wear out their clutches by letting them slip, so screw those wimp auto mini vans and hondas who might get mad about you leaving a car length gap when stopped!(and they are creeping)

If you're talking mileage, aside from not beating the hell out of the car, I've always found fuel injector cleaner every so often to be of some help. I use Starbrite Startron, actually an additive, but I've heard of the wonders it does with the ethanol they've been adding into the gas lately. Since putting some in I've noticed that I've gotten about an extra 30 miles out of a tank.

For injector cleaner and carbon deposite removal I recomend 44K from BG. Until recently you could not get it in stores and i think it is still kind of hard to find in retail, but any certified mechanic should be able to get it for you for around $11. The stuff does wonders for almost any engine around 100k miles or more. Ive been told that it is one of the few fuel aditives that will actually clean the engine.(clean internals = more power and better gas mileage) i.e. remove all carbon build up and clean injectors. If you get some ask you mechanic how many times he thinks your engine will need it and how often. In all the high mileage cars that i treated with it ran smoother afterward. Oh, and to do it, just incase, add a can before you fill up when your tank is near bone dry, then run that tank to the half way mark and fill up and then run that tank down near bone dry before filling up again.

BTW with n/a or a nontuned for ethanol fi car gas with ethanol will give you less power. It s ok for street though, but make SURE that you do not run too high of a percent of ethanol, it will degrade some of the parts of the fuel system that it comes in contact with that are not rated for alcohol. I'd say MAX 20% ehtanol if you dont do it often, about 10% if all the time and 15% if about every other time.

I just figured the more expensive stuff burned cleaner, idk, I just always believe that you get what you pay for.

Much thanks, I've learned some useful things here. I really need to develope some good driving habits to save one gas and keep my car running well.

That's why I recommend Starbrite StarTron fuel additive. I work in a boating store where the ethanol has really been killing guy's outboards and engines. Magazine articles and personal testimonies from the guys the come in say it's the only thing that helps. It was never intended to do that, but it takes care of whatever water may be in the tank which will rust things, and combined with the ethanol forms a sludge. They don't have much scientific info to back up the product, but from the way it's been selling, I put my faith in it. Might be worth a look into.

First off, Hate-a-saurus, you've got a bad ass car dude.

"Stop wasting money on premium gas ................ use the 87 octane

Premium gas is for boosted or high compression engines"
So you're saying if you get a turbo or a supercharger installed you need to put high octane in the car?
