X-Cal2 vs Pre-tuned chipThe SCT Xcal-2 is around $400 nearly. It just tunes my chip that I already have right? Which should I go towards, and will using the X-cal2 give me more hp than the pre-tuned chip? Side Question: What is the difference in the MAC Straight shot CAI 99 v6 3.8 and the MAC Cold Air Intake 99 v6 3.8 Does straight shot give more HP? |

The $10-$50 chips you see on ebay are actually IAT resistor's. All they do is fake the PCM into thinking the air is cooler than it actually is to change the fuel mixture. In reality its not a chip, and it wont add any horsepower. The computer will adjust to the false readings making the IAT resistors junk.
94-04 Mustangs have a J3 port on the side of their vehicles' computer (aka EEC, PCM etc) which accepts chips. When you install a chip onto the J3 port it overrides the stock PCM settings. One reason why the X-Cal 2 flashers are so popular is because they plug into the OBD-II port under the dash making changes to the PCM programming very easy. The chip requires you to pull the computer, clean the J3 port, and plug the chip in. The X-Cal 2 also saves the stock settings so that you can return to stock at anytime. The programming on the SCT X-Cal 2 and SCT Chips are the same, its just a different way to get the tuning to the computer. On a 94-04 V6 you will see a gain of 7-12rwhp and 7-12rwtq on premium fuel.
