It's also possible that your friend broke the wheels stud loose. Some aftermarket rims have less metal, so the stud sticks out from the wheel more and as a result the stud hit the end of the inside of the lugnut before it tightened on to the rim, this happened to me with my rims. There was no noticble gap between the rim and the lugnut, but you could see by looking inside the lugnut once it was off that it was hitting the end. I work at a ford dealership so I got this taken care of for cheap so I wouldn't have to do it myself, they put the car up on the lift and somehow either held the stud or got the lugnut off without damaging the stud, and then welded the stud in place and put new longer lugs on. Unless you know how and have the tools to replace the stud yourself (you'll need to if you drill it out) I would say just go to a mechanic and they can take care of it for relatively cheap (I got everything done for $30).

Drilling down the center of the stud with a drill bit the same diameter as the stud should work. Another option is to split the nut with a small chisel. The width of the chisel should be the same as the space between the stud and wheel.

I believe replacing the stud is best done by removing the hub and having it pressed in and out.
