Turbo Fox V6 Build: Questions/Ideas?

So here’s the deal:
I just bought an ’83 notch minus engine/trans and well…just about everything else. It appears that the original owner was trying to turn it into a racecar but just never got around to it.

I’ve been playing around with engine ideas for a while now—5.0 vs. mod engine vs. split port v6 + turbo and I’ve since decided that the v6 turbo is going to be the way to go. I owned a 240sx ka-t before now and absolutely fell in love with boost. The guiding philosophy to this build is balance. I don’t need the quickest ¼ or the tightest turning radius, just a well balanced street performer that’ll lay down about 350HP/TQ.

I have a couple of questions:
  • How strong are the v6 internals? With the power levels I want to achieve will they hold up, or should I upgrade to forged?
  • I suppose the question that follows this are, with a decent port/polish job, heads, cams and turbo is the v6 split-port capable of producing these numbers, or do I need to stroke to 4.2?
  • Transmission: considering this is a street car, I think the choice to go manual is a given. Will a fox t-5 bolt up to engine or do I need to find a 99+ transmission?
  • Turbo system: I’m not that familiar with engines with larger displacement since I’ve been poking around imports for most of my life. Popular turbo choices for V8s seems to be 60-1s and twin t3s. I’m still undecided about whether to go single or twin, any input on this note would be greatly appreciated.

That’s all for now. I’ll try to keep you updated with pics and progress so stay tuned.

well depending how bad you want the turbo hit me a PM
a t-5 will bolt up to a 99-04 motor
stock it can handle the 350 with a good tune. the tranny might as far as auto.
for that motor if you really dont wana go above 350whp then a t3 is fine for you and a quick spooler

if your serious and have the money i might be able to squeeze you a kit from somewhere
also there is someone selling a kit for $3800
but he claimed it to be a race kit from tma turbo...its not its a street kit. and street kits are $3600 or they WERE. so he's deffinitly going to have to go lower on his price. either way its a good kit for you
hit me a pm
my current goal is 350rwhp+ which i'll see in jan.

I appreciate the offer, but I'm very much still in the planning stages and don't quite have that kind of cash at the moment. Thanks though.

as your questions about the engine... it is a radically strong block and with some small internal works and porting and polishing the heads you could easily see 350-450 even ...

honestly if you put 9 psi on a cammed port and polished engine and tune it you will def see 350 ...

i would like to provide you with many links to get some ideas...
Super Six Motorsports
Delk Performance
Tom Morana Racing Engines
TMA TURBO

those are some places that you can get started on... read/scroll through them and see if you can get some ideas on what all you need to do to see expected numbers

they also ... i would like to suggest that you look at hellion turbos and see if you can get a kit that kinda fits... its a rough idea i had but never had the time to research it ... as i discovered it last night

No he is not, but he has ideas and numbers that you could expect to see... you said you know turbos pretty well, and i believe that on his site he give the turbo size... that way you can get a good idea of what turbo can put out what power on what set up ... that is why i linked tma ...

There is a new company that builds turbos for the sn-95 mustang give me a few and i might be able to track it down

Next question: is it worth it to buy one of the power pack kits from SSMS with heads, intake and cam? They're fairly pricey, but does anyone know/have experience with it and can attest to it?

if you already have a v6 engine then yes its worth it, if you dont, then just buy a built engine from SSMS

its not really worth it unless you are putting boost through them thats when you will see the full capability of them... if you are looking for some there is a kid on here that might have the heads and intake for sale in the classified section ...

if you know how to work heads and have a flow bench that you have access to... you can make your own heads that are comparable for half the price... SSMS gets off by charging so much cause they are one of 2 companies that works on V6s that have made them selves public to the internet and the community of V6's
