Need Advice On Performance Chips

Hey guys before you all start saying chips are crap buy a tuner, I have a '95 so that's not an option. That being said what chips do guys think would be best for my car? I was kinda looking at this one SCT Mustang Performance Chips at AmericanMuscle.com - Free Shipping!

Also I know that I at least want to wait until after I get a new exhaust before I get a chip. I know that I'll eventually want gears and maybe a shift kit. After that forged internals and a TT (but that is going to be pretty far down the road.) Should I hold off on the chip until after I've done certain mods? If so, which ones? Also, can you guys give me a realistic idea of what kind of gains I might see from this? Thanks for the help.

your gains would depend on the tune your chip has. forged internals will not matter for your chip. as for going tt, just buying a chip for it will not cut it. you would need a dyno tune. a chip would be good after the mods avaric said earlier, and with the gears you will need a speedo calibration.

What do you think of the SCT chip in the link? Are there any chips out there that are better? Is that a good price for that chip? What kind of tune would I want in the chip to give me the highest possible performance gains? BTW where can I go to get a dyno tune? How much does that usually run?

SCT is one of the best around. you should look to spend no more than $250+... you pay for what you get. As for the chip some you can custom order and some come pre-programmed. you will need see what performance parts you have on your car and your plans for your car in the near future when getting one. places that custom tune the chips will be more helpful because they could tune to the specifications for what performance you want. where you can get dynoed depends on where you are from. i have no clue what shops in VA dyno tune but im sure you could look it up. look to spend at least $80 per run on a dyno.. usually for a tune you get 3 runs ($240)... that $80 is a rough estimate... you will most probably spend more than that each run

Well that chip is $270, but it seems like they do a custom tune based on the mods you have and what kind of gas you run (I run 93+ octane). They do say that if your car is really heavily modded that you will have to go to an SCT dealer for a dyno tune. I have no idea where the nearest SCT dealer is. But I don't think I'll need to do that until I have the TT.

if you want my honest opinion monty skip the chip and spend the extra $170 and get the xcal 2 handheld tuner. it is much more worth it and very customizable. you will also be able to read and clear trouble codes. and as you get more and more mods you can have more custom tunes made. yu will be much happier if you pay a little extra and get something that will be much better instead of wasting your money. you will also have the potencial for more gains with the handhelp as opposed to the chip.

sparknotes version:

Skip the chip for now and get a handheld tuner when you have the money and you will be MUCH MUCH MUCH happier

thats correct. you will not need a dyno tune until you add forced induction. for fyi, a dyno tune is better than a chip anyways. you may be bale to look up on the SCT web site or try to find an sct dyno in your area, but you probobly will not have to worry about that until much later

Yeah TJ I wish I could get a tuner. But unfortunately the chip is my best option. I just hope I can get one that's worth it. I hope the SCT chip is a good one.

since you have to get a chip SCT would be the one to go with, they are one of the best IMO, i would feel safe with anything made by SCT

haha true... just make sure you check and double check your order before finalizing it when ordering chips... it would cost more money to have it re-programmed with the correct tune

don't know if this was said yet... but check to see if you have an OBD1 or OBD2 computer first... also if you go through sniper you can get your own chip burner so you can modify it at w.e point in time you want... of course it costs $700 but still
