ight 87 octane is the recommend octane for our cars. 87 SHOULD be the lowest grade octane sold at the pump...i know they're are claims of 85 so for arguements sake for ANYone...i dont care ![]() anyway back to the story 87 89 91 or 93 is the common choices at the pump. the higher the octane the slower the burn for instance, 87 octane will burn up in the combustion chamber faster then 93 octane now according to an article in MM&FF race gas(usually like 100, 105 octane) can corrod your connecting rods that in NO way makes sense to me since the connecting rods never see fuel. so how its cause from race gas makes no sense if the race gas doesnt go past the compression rings anyway. a slower burning gas burns more efficiently all together, with extra added air in the combustion chamber(boost) where as an 87 will burn it to fast that it wont be as safe as 93octane i dont know if you've ever notice a car that is running alcohol injection or race gas you can smell the fumes and the race gas as the car passes or if your next to it at idle the fuel is actually burning slow that some gas vapor might not get fully burnt. also a colder heat range plug will not burn it as well. also for those guy who have BMWs or any car that from the factory is suppose to run a premium octane and run 87 instead. check your spark plugs. i can almost bet you have corrosion on them if your suppose to run 89 do NOT run any lower grade gas then that. and YES if you use 87 octane and switch to 89 theres about a 10cent difference and you get about 3mpg. its worth it

i would only jump to 89. if you ask your tuner he might be able to make a tune for your for saving gas and using 93 octane to save more from an xcal2, diablo or sniper but i dont think you'll see 6mpg. i think to high of an octane on a stock motor will not do good for it
