Hurray Ticking Sound!

Hey all...

I'm new to the forums so thanks for having me! I have a 2000 V6. Less than 50K miles on it. It's not 'modified' so I'm hoping I'm still welcome to post this question here. Recently I had to get some brake service done on it. Last week in fact. Rotors are fine. Pads replaced, etc... This morning (6 days after work) I begin to hear a ticking sound. It's very random since it didn't start right when I started my car. It started probably 5 minutes later. It doesn't matter if I'm in park, reverse, drive, stopped, accelerating, braking, etc... Still the constant fast ticking sound. I'm thinking 'belt'. Does anyone have any idea what this could be? It's coming from low in the right side towards the back of the hood. I hear it pretty clear in front of the passenger side while in the car. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated!

~M.

Welcome to MM. You are welcome here even if you car is stock. We like to think of stock cars as a blank canvas. If you hang around here much, you will be talking about converting to duals and taking off your speed limiter. lol

I am not sure about the ticking. Belts don't typically make a ticking sound when slipping. It could be the fuel injectors. The 4V Mach and Cobra motors have a known problem with a head tick but I have not heard any problems with the 6ers. Lots of V6 folks on here so I am sure they will post up.

I actually have a ticking sound, that sounds like it is from the passenger side as well. If I apply the brake it goes away, but when I let off it starts back up. So I'll be interested in finding out what your problem is as well as mine. Hopefully they are the same.

ticking noises from the rear lower portion of the engine bay would place the suspect as a possible exhaust manifold leak, I have heard of several guys having problems with their manifolds, but to rule out a belt issue you can always run your car with the belt off. other ticking noises non-exhaust related could be a valve, pushrod or cam bearing or wheel bearing... does the ticking speed change with the motor speed?

on the second issue, ticking when brakes off and stops when brakes on... i would inspect the brakes first then see if you have a possible wheel bearing issue.

I've been leaning towards wheel bearings since it does seem to get faster as the car speeds up, and slows down as the car slows without brakes applied. I'm confused to why the squeeking would stop when I apply the brakes even before the car stops the ticking stops.

I found this site - searching for the same problem. I purchased my 2006 V-6 Mustang less than a month ago. I first noticed the noise over 2 weeks ago...and it's driving me nuts !!! Sounds like it's coming from the back left passenger side..At first I thought it might be the back left speaker. The sound is coming from the Engine..It is the sound of the A/C clutch engaging & Disengaging. My car only makes the sound when my foot is on the gas or I'm using cruise controll. Mine cycles exactly every 13 seconds...and it bothers me. Hope that helps..and I would like to get mine fixed too. Try poppin' the hood..sit in the car w/ A/C on and slowly press the gas pedal...It's Super loud with the Hood Up !! Best of Luck...Rod

woah... ticking sounds is such a vauge way to explain something... espicaly when there are a million reasons why a car would tick... maybe theirs a bomb... maybe you spun a bearing... yea know ... so its hard for someone to say oh yea its this and that over the net ... no offence or anything... at all

belts can tick... if theirs a hole in the belt ... itll click ...

like what was said earlier... exhaust leaks are a possible reason too... the best way to figure out what it is is to get a stethoscope... and just treat it like a lil kid at the doctors office...

good luck... hope yall figure it out

well since were all talking about ticking. my 97 also ticks randomly and has for some time. mechanic friend of mine took a gander and think its the hydraulic lifters. terrific. he even suggested i replace em while doing the head gaskets awhile back but i nixxed it. guess i should have.
