My Door Is Busted

I bought my 99 V6 with a sloppy driver side door. When you open it, it drops maybe 1/8". Enough for it to rub against the fender and make a noise that hurts to listen to. If I leave it, its eventually going to break the latch. Mechanic says new hinges. $150 parts+$125 labor. I went to the Ford dealership today and got the hinges (only $125) and I'm gonna try taking off the door, unbolting the hinges and remounting the door and touching up where its rubbing the fender this weekend. Anyone ever try this before, if so, what is the difficulty and what are the chances that I won't be able to fix my problem? I posted this in the tech section but figured I might get some more help here. Thanks.

I don't know of anyone who has tried this before, but you want might want to make sure you have a buddy or two to hold the door to align it with the holes properly for the hinges. If you can't get some buddies to help there is a tool that holds the door and you can raise and lower it to align it properly. I don't know where you can get one, but I do know it's out there. Good luck. My friends mustang did the same thing...never did get around to fixing it since a lady rear ended him and totaled the car.

warning !

oh man ! it's like im reading my own post... I hadn't had my stang 6 months and I was working a fireworks stand for our church camp and in came a horrendous rainstorm on july 4th. Long story short, my car ended up with a 6"x3"x1.5" dent in the top of the fenderwell over the wheel... stupid me figured i could take the fender loose/off and fix it by myself. WRONG !

I took the door off to get to the dent and got it most of the way right again, but when i was putting the door back on it went on crooked and the first time i opened the door back up, it dent the crap out of my fender AND door. Even when i finally broke down and got two of my buddies to come help me, we never did get the door to match the rear quarter panel perfectly. I got most of the second spot of dent on the fender looking halfway decent again but the door is still scewed. I am now gonna have to replace the fender AND door shell to get it to look right again

My point is... DO NOT attempt to remove door/hinges/whatever by yourself with or without a jack (i used a 2ton floor jack to help steady it and still screwed mine). If there is a special lift or something that you can rent/buy within your price range, then go for it if you feel brave. Otherwise, get a least a couple of people to help you or take it to a shop and have them do it so if they screw it up their insurance will cover your new fender

Wow that sucks... I might take it back to the shop and pay the $130 for them to screw with it. Thanks for the warning and good luck getting it fixed.
