Auto transmission removal please help me

I'm in the middle of putting a new transmission in my cousins mustang but I'm having a problem with the torque converter bolts...the ones that are bolted onto the flywheel. They just won't come off. I've tried clamping the flywheel and having my dad get the bolts off but that didnt work. They are super tight and are rounding. Theres not enough room to cut the bolts off. Is there anyway i can get the tranny off without having to undo the bolts? Any suggestions are appreciated.

BTW if it matters this is for a 2000 v6

The torque convertor has 4 studs and there are 4 nuts which hold it on the flex plate. Try some kind of penetrating oil as suggested above. Also use a 6 point socket.

If all else fails you can pull the transmission off with the torque convertor still bolted to the flex plate; though, this isn't recommended since it might damage seals. With the trans off you would have more room to deal with the stuck nuts. Perhaps a nut splitter would work.

Those bolts are thread locked and pretty much designed not to come off. Use as long a breaker bar as you can and replace them with new when you put it back together, and dont forget the thread lock.

it'll be VERY hard to get them out
they should have a thread locker on them i believe. not to mention about at least 80ft lbs of torque or around that area. it needs every bit of it. ive tighten flywheels and torque converters to manufactor specs and the bolts still come loose. a thread locker of some sort is needed.
you will need a big pole to go on to your ratchet.
i'd use a 1/2 ratchet no doubt, and the biggest longest ratchet you have and a pole

The specified torque is 27 ft lbs and no thread locker is specified. It may be that someone used thread locker or excessive torque and that is the problem.

You should be able to lock the crankshaft using a socket and breaker bar on the crank pulley bolt and get the torque convertor nuts off with a 6 point socket and breaker bar after soaking them in penetrating oil overnight. If nothing else this should break the studs off the torque convertor, which at least gets it apart. Another option is to split the nuts with a chisel after which they will come off easily.

Ok I had to pull a pressure plate off an old dodge pickup and what I did is use a 12 point metric socket small enough to hammer and force over the head of the bolt and breaker bar'd that beeotch.. It's not the best thing to do to a socket but I only own Craftsman tools anyway.. Free lifetime replacement
