New Mustang - Newbie Questions

Hello all, I hope you don't mind, I have several questions.. I'm totally new to Mustangs. I had a big change going from an 89 Aerostar minivan, to a 99 Mercury Tracer, now an 06 Mustang woohoo! Anyways I bought a new V6 in March.

TCS - I have this button for traction control.. its always on by default. I can easy push it to disable it, but what is its main use for? I'm sure in hard weather conditions it would help but for racing or anything, is there any reason why I SHOULD turn it off? Secondly, is that going to be my main stopper when trying to peel out?

O/D - I was reading on the forums that for gas efficiency its best to keep this on, but possiblt when racing to turn it off...??

Racing - Lets face it.. I only have a stock V6, let alone its automatic. I havent really done any "real" racing.. just very aggresive driving. Do I even stand a chance against any 5spd cars with me being automatic? Is it even worth trying with a V6 auto?

Mods - I was thinking about going to dual exhaust using flowmasters for better sound, but idk if I can afford it or want to go through the customization hassle or getting a new bumper. I was considering the single exhaust flowmaster, because its an easy swap.. anyone have any thoughts or experience with the sound quality on a single exhaust? Also, I've been hearing about CAI.. anyone have any brand suggestions for those on a V6?

And lastly.. possibly a hood scoop. I think the easiest way for me to do this is just by buying a whole new hood with the scoop already installed on it. I am somewhat picky on the style of the scoop, but I really cant find any good places online with pictures or who even sell this. Do I have the wrong approach on this?

Any help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance for helping out!

Can't help you with the traction control cuz I don't have it.

O/D is good if you have a modded car with a tune. That is when you turn it off for racing. If your car still has a stock tune...don't mess with it. It won't do anything.

Racing - You do stand a chance against 5 speed cars. You have something they wont have. Constistancy. If you get that auto tuned you can put down extremely constant numbers. Less room for error, but realize an automatic is only good for drag racing.

Mods - It really isn't that hard to go from single exhaust to dual exhaust. Now me being me I'm the one says the get the entire job done as a whole so you don't have to go back and fix it. I'm the one that says replace everything from the headers back. Now I understand that money is prob an issue. It is for me and quite a few other guys on here. A lot of us are teens. I'm 18 and work at a grocery store. If your gonna go for the best sound, and n/a or supercharged get some long tube headers, a h-pipe(that will work with long tubes), and some flowmasters. Now for the cai I wouldn't recommend a name brand one. A cai is pretty much a bigger tube with a filter. It can only do so much. I would check out ebay or www.mustangtuning.com for a non name brand cai.

Now for the s-197 mustang I've noticed there arent that many hood options with hood scoops yet. Don't worry only second year of the new body style goin into the third. Items are still bein produced and thought about, and with the aftermarket just booming on this body style, something you like will probably come out. Check out www.mrbodykit.com for some hoods. They have the most from what I have seen, but they are kinda pricey.

tcs - traction control system; this will provide max traction on wet or slippery surfaces without feathering the throttle. when your tire begins to slip the TCS senses the wheel speed differences through the computer and it will automatically apply brake to the faster spinning wheel to attempt to reduce the slippage. in most conditions you can turn this off, especially if attempting to do a burnout.

overdrive - on your daily driver i would leave overdrive enabled unless you were racing, towing or driving through the mountians. overdrive is your last gear, this allows the engine to operate at a lower rpm at the higher speeds.

as far as CAI i would suggest going with the JLT CAI for your 06 4.0L; http://www.jlttruecoldair.com
but looking at the site i don't see it listed anymore... might want to send him and e-mail or call

overdrive is an extra gear pretty much that u can use mainly on the highway to help save gas cuz ur car will be a lower RPM.

the exuast dont get jus one muffler, a muffler shop will most likely cut the whole in ur bumper to make it fit, the one i went to they did that n it looked fine. keepin the y pipe does have th best flow...actually of true dual, H, and X pipe its the worst

the hood scoop...if u want the look its great, but its not doing anything to your car.

Rather than the muffler shop cuttin his back bumper to make straights fit. Why not get the dual down tube style. That way the new exhaust will bolt right up to his existing drivers side exhaust now and all he has to do is place a hanger on the pass side. I saw the whole kit on a website the other night that connects at the "Y" pipe and he can do it himself and save a ton of labor cost. I believe the kit cost 329 or 339 - I will try and locate the website where I saw this at.

haha i only use the traction control for when i'm doing huge corners haha it slows you down so you don't spin out so you dont even have to worry about anything but the gas and steering like a video game lol but yeah it turns on and bogs your engine down as your tires start to slip. bet you found that out alrdy. i leave it on unless i'm racing cause then i don't sqeak the tires and have cops following me.
