mustang hoods are heavy because they are constructed with a material called SMC. its similar to fiberglass except for it has more ability to flex. the mustang hoods are also two layers with a hollow area in between. both layers of smc are pretty thick which makes the hood heavy.

Yeah my old hood was pretty heavy compared to my 2000 Cobra R hood. And if you were wondering about that grounding wire on the hood, cuz I always was, they say the hoods have a tendancy to produce a static electric charge when high speed winds travel over the hood.

the grounding strap on the hood insulator also helps with AM radio reception, after I removed mine the AM station reception is very poor and full of static.

Are you talking about that black insulation on the underside of the hood w/ the pony embedded into it? I'm not sure if that plays any role but to maybe deaden the engine bay noise or help w/ the heat? I don't have any on my new hood and I don't notice a difference in noise. I don't have any overheating problems either.

I don't think just cuz I don't have insulation on my hood makes it that much lighter, most likely the material the company used to make it with. And a carbon fiber hood is not a bad thing, actually it can be painted to match the color of your car and you don't have to leave it in the color you order it in.

I would put a carbon fiber hood on my stang just because i like the way CF looks and a cowl induction CF hood would be even better in my book. I would buy one in a heartbeat if i found a good deal.

the black piece that undercovers the hood collects heat with a built in metal sheet. it weighs all of 5-6 ounces.
