Can someone explain Cams to me.

I have a general idea, but ive been listening to some videos of the cars that are cammed and they sound decent and I was just curious what exactly it is.

What is the price of doing it?

What will it do to my car?

Thanks.

well for what your asking a cam will lift the valve in the heads usually both longer and open it more allowing more air to enter the combustion chamber on the intake stroke and more air to let out on the exhaust stroke in turn making it faster and more powerful since there is now more air being combusted to cause a more powerful power stroke

well the prices range and depend
$150 for regrind---wack worthless almost
generally a new cam is about $250ish
but you'll want to upgrade your push rods, rockers, and valve springs so that takes it to about $500-600
good nice sound and for a bolt on or stock motor its worth about 20rwhp
motor with s/c or turbo is about 30-40+hp

i would say no unless you have mods... i wouldnt get it on a stock car because there are so many different duration cams for different applications, like n/a, s/c or t/c. figure out which way you wanna go then start to build toward that. a cam is a great addition but as for throwing a cam in a stock car i wouldnt, i would spend the money on bolt ons or gears, unless you were going to get a storker kit with the cam

agreed^

even a bolt on car i wouldnt do a cam...probably still be in the mid 14s just sounding a lil better unless you do heads and intake
whats the point of allowing more air in the combustion chamber with out upgrading the path there..like porting the intakes and heads

But for most of the guys who just want sound, and are gonna do basic bolt ons its a great mod and gonna add a small bit of power.

Valvesprings are a virtual necessity, but pushrods and rockers are dependent on several variables. Cars w/ billet camshafts don't always need PR's and rockers are rarely a "necessity".

Maybe surprisingly, there are still big gains to be had with stock intakes, headers, etc.

Even with stock intakes and no LT's, my car picked up ~50whp from just heads and cam. Otherwise, the car essentially has just CAI and Cobra take-off exhaust.

Obviously, there are a lot of things that are good ideas to do with Heads and/or cam, but a lot of them are not necessities. I would say, though, that if you're going to do a cam anyway, go ahead and do heads at the same time. Otherwise, if you do heads later, you've got to take the engine apart again, and you've either got to either replace the cam or live with a mismatched cam before or after the heads.
