i went outside to start my car so it would b warm when i got ready to leave for school. well i started it and got out. once i got out i noticed that it would idle a lil bit, jump up in rpms, make a clickin noise, and then go back to normal idle. it quit after doin this 2 or 3 times so is anything i should worry about?

it last ran this mornin and it quit after it did it about 3 times. it took about 4 minutes for it to do it the 3rd time so it was almost warmed up if not already.

hmm, mine only makes a clicking noise when i havent started it in awhile, but goes away once the engine warms up. Mine was the lifters and was only because the car wasnt run recently. If it goes away once the car warms up, its prolly the same.

Assuming its not a leak, its most likely the lifters and is not a big deal, as long as it goes away once everything starts to warm up.

if its lifters. running 1L of ATF fluid in your motor about 250-300 miles before your oil change might free it up and unstick it. they tick because they collapse because of crud blocking the oil passage in them.

cold don't cause ticks. using improper viscosity oil for your weather or season does.

How a hydrolic lifter works....Oil is pumped thru them when your engine is running, hence 'Hydraulic'. They ride on top of your camshaft, push up via a pushrod, to a rocker arm, where the rocker arm pushes the valve open, exhaust valve, or intake valve. They use the oil in a hydraulic fashion to keep the pushrod/rocker arm clearance tight. When a car gets COLD, this clearance increases. Eventually the car warm's up, the lifter's do their job better, and no noise.

hence the thinner oil if its cold out. helps prevent the lifters from ticking on start. i know how lifters work thats why i recommended the ATF fluid to clean them up maybe they r sticking.

they must be dirty or oil isnt getting there because of viscosity issues or something. i say this because i live in canada it was -15 this morning and the only tick i have is an exhaust leak that is gone in like 2 seconds. also i have a escort with lifters and there is no tick when i start that in the cold. and they dont tick from the factory when its new and its a cold start. so the tick is caused by something besides the cold IMO im sure his car was tick free at some time in its life.

the few issues i usually have with my stang in the winter are cold related, so try whatever you think will fix it.
