2007 Mustang V6 knocking when accelerating
Hey all, this is my first post. I have a 2007 Mustang V6 manual with 24k miles. I recently installed a BBK CAI. Since installing it, I get serious pre-ignition (knocking) when accelerating in 3rd & 4th gear. The reason I went with the BBK, is that all of the forums that I have read including BBK's documentation is that it did not require a tune. I have not gotten any CEL or codes, but I am concerned for long term damage. Should I be? I called BBK support and they suggested that I move to a higher octane fuel, but according to the Ford docs, the 05 - 08 Mustang is rated specifically at 87 octane and states that going higher could cause damage.
Any thoughts or suggestions would be greatly appreciated. |

first move to a higher octane fuel and see if this solves the knock. to verify that it is in fact a spark knock because of fuel starvation.

Thanks for the help guys. I will definately do so. Which tune is best for the V6 in your opinions? Are they mod newby compatible such as myself or should I just go have it professionally done? I am pretty savy when it comes to general auto mechanics, but do not like the idea personally of blowing up my engine.

a custom tune would be best.
I would invest in a hand held tuner like the one in my or jugs sig. be sure to check what your local dyno tuner uses before making your purchase though.

a do it yourself tuner will be fine. The brands everyone seems to like are SCT, Sniper, and Diablosport. one of those will work fine for you.

Thanks guys. You've both been a big help.. Also BTW Jugs, nice review of the Sniper. I just read it. It looks easy. Do you know if the flash file has a time/date stamp or date identifier on it? If I get it tuned and revert back to the factory tune for warranty work, will the dealer be able to determine that it was tuned at some point and time?

be SURE to mention to the dealer not to re flash your ecu while getting work done
![]() if you change your ecu's tune in the slightest your screwed for the most part because your tuner won't recognize the stock ecu and therefore won't tune your car.
