CAI options

Ive been reading a little bit about Cold air intake and i was wondering which brand is the most reliable when it comes to HP. I have a K&N on my mazda but its a wankel rotary engine so when it comes to mustangs im a newbie. Im thinking about having this as my first modification and i was hoping you guys could help me out on what all should be done next. a list would be cool if u guys have the time id appreciate it. Oh and is it true that you have to tune it when you change it from stock or is tuning just to help clean up the lag from changing the stock intake i wasnt for sure that was just my idea of it

most of the CAI's availible are going to produce similar gains... what it really comes down to is your budget and do you want looks. the main differences in the CAI's are the material the intake tube is made of and the filter location. the composite intakes are less prone to heat soak when compared to the chrome ones. also the fenderwell CAI kits are going to pull cooler air when compared to those that have the high flow filter located inside the engine bay. you should be able to find a bunch of different kits in the v6 parts index under "air/fuel": http://www.moddedmustangs.com/forums...t-vp43637.html

i am running a MAC fenderwell CAI, the heat soak issue doesn't appear to be a big problem but rather the rusting/discoloring of the chrome if not cleaned on a regular basis.

i'd say just get a $25 one off ebay, it'll be the same gains and as long as you put right..which isnt too difficult. and just clean it like 99mustang232 sed

Ok Cool thanks. Now i got an idea of my CAI, can i get a different brand Throttle body?? or does it need to be the same brand cause i found a BBK hiflow throttle body on rpmoutlet and i was thinking about mixing my performance parts up if its possible to add some diversity and maybe a little extra hp who knows?? . Once i got my list made out and am confident thats prolly when ill start ordering but i just wanna make sure its what i want.

If i got the Screaming Demon Coil pack distributor with the MSD 8.5mm super conductor wires would there have to be any reprogramming done to my cars computer?

no

i would also shy away from going to the aftermarket throttlebody, minor bolt-ons don't warrant the upgrade. you will still pull the same amount of air as if you did a slight polish and halfshafting to your stock TB (link), don't waste your time with TB spacers either.

So throttlebody spacers are a waste of time? Like grizzly03 was talking about rpmoutlet I am planning on ordering their MotoBlue Hi-flo intake package whick includes a BBK CAI, BBK 65mm throttlebody, and a Motorvator throttlebody spacer. They say the spacer adds up to 10+ hp on it's own due to its "unique screw" design which creates a vortex airflow into the manifold. It's possible to purchase these parts seperately and was wondering if it would be a wiser choice to get the CAI and throttlebody on their own and just forget the TB spacer?

throttlebodies aren't a waste of time if you have the mods that warrant it, which you don't so the gains would be very small... that spacer stuff is b.s. i would sink my money into something that will give you the gains you are after like a set of FRPP gears and t-lock or SCT handheld/chip from VMPTuning, long tube headers and true dual exhaust, ASP underdrive pulley... i would leave that motoblue stuff alone.

yeah headers, exhaust, underdrive pulley those are also on my list to check into but what about the SCT handheld chip you were talking about...Is it user compatible enough for a newb like me to use and not run into any diagnostic problems while trying to tune it when i get some better perf parts on my stock engine?

an aggressive cam should be your last mod so it works in conjunction with everything you have done to the car.

may i suggest a tune..

i was talking about two seperate things;

The SCT handheld flashers are a device that has a cable with a OBDII connector that you can use to tweak settings on your car's computer like wheel sizes, gear ratios, change speed limiter settings. The handhelds can also store pre-programed tunes that you can use to reflash the entire program on the cars computer. the SCT XCAL2 has a USB port and can also attach to your home computer/laptop

The J3 SCT flip chip is a small circuit board that stores several programs that connects to the back of your cars computer that allows you change preset tunes via cable and switch, but it is not as flexible as the handhelds.

needless to say most find the handhelds quite user friendly and easy to use, they will also read trouble codes and have a lot of neat features... but like AB said, they guys at VMPTuning specialize in tuning the V6 Mustang and will take care of you, they also offer a discount for ModdedMustang board members...

your computer is located behind the passenger side floorboard kicker panel, fairly easy to access.

If i was wanting to change the lights behind my gauge panel to some like blue or red LED light thing or just something kinda racy to add some extra atmosphere to the interior what would be the best way to go with that

racey or ricey... lol, but there are several aftermarket gauge bezels and clusters that you can buy... there are also a few on ebay that have the different colors and lights. the simco gauges look pretty nifty but a little pricy i think AtlanticBlue99 has a set maybe ask him about his; http://www.mustangtuning.com/v6gauges.html
