Trouble code p0340 car wont run

Okey so while i was driving my car killed and wouldnt start again. A day later it starts but turns over real slow and then wont stay running for very long. It is giving the code p0340 cam position sensor ciruit malfunction. I checked for power in the positive going to the cam position sensor and the test light did not light up. So i believe im not getting power to the sensor? how do i locate what i am losing the power at? I hate this electrical shit

I did, and im not getting power on the wire going to the sensor, what i didnt know is when is the sensor powered? Is it only while the car is running im assuming? When i run the car it stays running but sounds absolutely terrible so im afraid to run it. Also i didnt know how much power the light needs to light up, if the sensor wire provides enough power? or could i unhook the sensor and try starting the car with the tester in the eng of the connector?

It seems like the new gts have this problem caused by the alternator but it doesnt say anything about the new edges, or a v6, and also it seems like some people say it could be because of the spark plug wires, but i just have napa premium wires, and ive had them for 3000 miles with no problem, i did get my underdrive pulley about 2 or three weeks ago and maybe that caused a prob with the alternator?? But it was all fine untill now.

why does there have to be power going to it? isnt it possible that there is a short somewhere and that is the problem?

oh sorry i sort of worded that wrong, i know there has to be power to it for it to work, but its not working so i was asking if it was possible that power wasnt getting to it, i took christorres's statement as saying that there was power going to it, not that it needed to have power to operate.

umm how do you expect to see if power is going to the sensor?
it is possible theres a short but more LIKELY its the sensor

edit:
reading the other post i'd still say its the sensor
its doubtful there is a short to it. thats more rare then the sensor
not to mention its generally easier to just replace the sensor then finding and repairing the short
i personally hate most electronic BS

the sensor is like $20 i think..

im getting the sensor, and i appreciate your help i just dont have money to waste if its not something i truely need. And when you said it is unlikely that it is the sensor, well when i dropped in this engine i had to splice in a new connection from a different wiring harness because the wires pulled out of the coonector, so i think it is very likely that its the wires to the sensor. Also i am checking it with a test light where you hook one wire to a ground and touch the tool to the positive wire and if it lights up there is power, this is a very common proceedure for testing electrical stuff.
