this is true but for both of them to have the exact same symptoms is very unlikely.

No the wire is 1 vcc (red/green) and 3 ground. each set of secondaries has its own ground. at least from what i can tell from the schematic and reading my repair manual. the red/green is vcc (+) and they other 3 are ground (-) so in theory an open ground could cause this symptom.

ok here is how it goes.

Red/LT Green = VCC (+)

Tan/Orange = Ground to pcm

Tan/WHite = Ground to pcm

Tan/LT Green = Ground to pcm

the pcm alternates the ground according to the cyl # its firing. so it closes one ground and opens the other two. sounds to me its wiring to pcm or pcm.

i wanna add to this and this is weird. the manual says exactly what i stated above. about the polarities and i have tested these they are true.

i just would have thought they all would have a common ground (Red/LT Green) and alternating VCC

Was visiting my buddy at ford. he has a Explorer 5.4 right now with COP and the #8 cyl keeps miss firing. its a pcm issue. they have replaced the Injector, COP and plugs. same result. so it is quite possible to only have a single component effected by a bad PCM

I would definately at least check the resistance of the crank angle sensor in this situation.
