this is true but for both of them to have the exact same symptoms is very unlikely.

No the wire is 1 vcc (red/green) and 3 ground. each set of secondaries has its own ground. at least from what i can tell from the schematic and reading my repair manual. the red/green is vcc (+) and they other 3 are ground (-) so in theory an open ground could cause this symptom.

well they are looped so one bad ground means no spark

ok here is how it goes.
Red/LT Green = VCC (+) Tan/Orange = Ground to pcm Tan/WHite = Ground to pcm Tan/LT Green = Ground to pcm the pcm alternates the ground according to the cyl # its firing. so it closes one ground and opens the other two. sounds to me its wiring to pcm or pcm.

i just would have thought they all would have a common ground (Red/LT Green) and alternating VCC

well testing wiring is free. it is possible the coil was bad but go with the free method first IMO

Was visiting my buddy at ford. he has a Explorer 5.4 right now with COP and the #8 cyl keeps miss firing. its a pcm issue. they have replaced the Injector, COP and plugs. same result. so it is quite possible to only have a single component effected by a bad PCM

I would definately at least check the resistance of the crank angle sensor in this situation.
