Gears....not size

Ok so everyone has been telling me different things about gear installs(no one on here). Some people are telling me that I have to have the gears professionally installed because you have to have special tools and be "meshed" or something like that. While others are telling me that I can do it myself... So will someone please explain this to me. $300 is a lot to waste if I don't have to...I'm buying an 8.8" rear end the end of this month, if they don't sell it by then and I pray they don't!

if you dont have the tools or experience, you are better off paying a shop 150-250 to have them installed. i paid 200 for mine

you wont need an 8.8 unless you seriously plan on modding your v6

I found one for $500 and I would rather just buy it now and not have to worry later.
What "tools" do I need.
I don't have the experience, but my dad does.
Only thing is he says you have to have someone "mesh" them. The thing is he is used to 9" rear ends and I didn't know if theres something different there or whatever.

its the same thing just smaller in the 7.5
you wont have a different gear ratio in the 8.8 unless its a Mach rear or an older rear with 2.9xs

my step dad is kinda redneck and races circle track...we installed my gears with a hammer, some sockets and a punch for the bearings but ya gotta be careful...nothing broke or anything when we did it...used the stock shims for it so the backlash was set....my gears whine minimal so...

its a weird whine...it only whines from 40-45 mph and 60-65 mph...in every gear...but only in those ranges...ive been told to drain my differential fluid then put new stuff in with friction modifier since the rear end fluid would be old and broken in by now but i havent had a chance to yet..

if you try and install gears and not know what your are doing you must make sure you get the proper pinion depth. If you dont you will get "whine" which is the gears not meeting correctly and they will wear out faster. have them professionally put in....or pay more money later.

pay for it man, if you dont have a press and such, if your dad has dropped gears in a 9" before it will be close to the same process so he could do it, and use friction modifier for sure not using it = bad times

When the gears were first put in with the friction modifier....you should have changed the fluid after 500 miles to a synthetic gear oil.

thats what someone finally told me....like..2000 miles later haha..the hardest part of the whole process was getting my driveshaft off...the bolts were like salt welded in..it was crazy...we turned the motor by hand we were trying so hard...finally we had to put a pipe wrench on it to keep it from turning..it sucked ass...impact wouldnt budge it.

you also shouldnt have reused the stock internals when you put you gears on. It always better to put new stuff on when doing any upgrade.

we put in everything new but the shims...dont have a tool to check the pinion depth so we used the stock shims because they didnt split apart. once my rear end falls apart ill know not to do that again hahah

To Sum this up,

Don't install gears yourself unless you KNOW what your doing, and if you KNEW what you were doing you wouldn't be asking. Gear whine is not what you want.
