The EGR system introduces some exhaust gas into the intake. The purpose is to lower combustion temperatures, which reduces NOx emissions. If it leaned the mixture too much, due to a defect, it could cause a misfire, but as mentioned earlier, this should give an EGR code.

Typically the EGR is tested by applying vacuum to it to cause it to open and this should stall the engine. Don't know if it works that way on Ford products.

hey the 96-98 is located on the back of the TB... and the pipe is routed sorta behind the block ... my personal advice... don't remove any of it unless you have no intention or putting it back on

Well in another life I am a Stanford researcher working on fuel cell development for Honda, and before that I worked for NASA and DOE on fundamental chemistry research. One thing I worked on is the reaction of O atom with N2

O + N2 --> NO + N

which is one mechanism for NOx formation.

My knowledge of auto repair comes from studying shop manuals and rebuilding a number of cars.
