Water in my trunk

Ok so last saturday it rained all day and I left some stuff in my trunk(Big mistake on my part), and when Monday rolled around all my stuff was soaked, and there was water all in my trunk I found out the general region where the water is comming from, but I can't exactly pinpoint it. I have completely gutted out my trunk and there is water on the right side of my trunk kinda inline with my tailights. I checked that foamy stuff down by the seems and that seems to be ok and my weatherstripping seems alright and I checked for holes and didnt really find anything. Any suggestions before I take it up to a shop?

mustangs have that problem in the sn95 series. i cant remember the article i saw it in though. they had to check behind the insert on the right side by the gasoline filler neck and there was a leak there though. you can check out the neck of the gas tank from inside and put silicone or something around the gaps between the neck and the trunk bed if that is the case

I'm gonna check that out. Thanks. It does seem like that is logical by where the water is.

i hope this helps you out because you really dont want water in there causing rust or any structural damage for sure. i looked for the article some but couldnt find it. just check into it and keep us posted

basically what the article said was: it rains or you wash your car, water drips into the gas cap area not in the filler neck, but behind the filler door, then instead of draining out where it si supposed to straight down, something clogged the drain and it overflowed and seeped into the trunk via the sides of the filler neck, you can clean out around the fuel door really well or try and seal the filler nec area by the truck really well. i hope this helps some more

The more I think about it. The more logical it seems because my subwoofer was right next to my filler neck and underneath the enclosure there was a lot of water, and it also just seeped to other areas. Right now I have everything drying out, and I'm prob gonna clean it really well, and also seal it. I'll let everyone know how it went when I do it, and I will take pictures for a diy if anyone else gets that problem.

great! im glad that the same thing happened (not b/c it happened) because now you know you are probably headed in the right direction with the sealing the filler neck area. definitely make a DIY article out of sealing it. i searched and searched and could not find the article i first saw it in. plus, an article about such a serious problem could really benefit the site

this is so wierd: i smelled a funny sweaty kind of smell in my car this morning so this afternoon i went to check it out, and in my trunk, there is mold on the right directly behind the light and it was damp under the carpet with mold on top. is this what happened to your cars? i just took out my trunk liner carpet and i will clean it later, it has never leaked before but we have had rain for 3 days straight and now the next day it is there. i think i may now have a leak too; i feel your frustration. now i have a gutted trunk and i miht just leave it this way. i removed the spare and jack and all, now my car sits higher in the back. this weekend i will have to look into a possible leak scenario.

lol, great. what is the best way to clean mold off of carpet and keep it from spreading/coming back? i have the carpet out now and it just looks cheap with a gutted trunk. once i get it all cleaned thoroughly, i can put the carpet back in.

If it turns out that doesn't fix your problem... do this.

Take everything out of your trunk. Get a flashlight and a buddy you TRUST.
Hop in your trunk and close the lid, then have your buddy run a water hose over the top of the car. Running a stream with no nossle... kind of like the rain rolling down your car. Have him hit it at all different angles but long enough at each position that you can acurately check for leakage. I used to have to do this all the time when I was a GM tech... hated squeaks, rattles, and leaks.

Hmmm My carpet dried out before it got moldy so I couldn't tell ya brother but I would expect some real good carpet cleaner and a nylon bristle bush should do the trick and make sure you dry it before you put it back in or you will be doing it again in a week or two. I know your not stupid bro but it is real easy to overlook the little things. Happens to me all the time. :wink

ok, today i fixed my "problem" but i do not want to put my spare/jack/stock carpet back in there. what i now have a vision for is geting a carpet of the same material made that can line the spare tire well and cover the sides of the trunk floor so i can have that circular indention carpeted and make it useful for putting things in (ie: bookbag, small cooler, duffle bag, nitrous? lol)

so, i can use my stock trunk liner carpet until it comes to the spare tire well are. i can cut out the circle and have that make the bottom of the indention. now what i need is carpet of the same material to line the sidewalls of the spare tire area. does anyone know where i can get this dark grey automobile carpeting pretty cheap? i just need a rectangular peice the width of the sidewall's depth and length of the circumference. any suggestions? yall like my idea?

Everyday that I go to get all the water out of my trunk it gets greyer and greyer and with all that grey comes water. It's really starting to tick me off. I'm gonna try to do it all saturday. Go up to Lowes or somewhere and pick up the silicone or atleast some type of liquid foam, and then get started on that article.

It's a situation that shouldn't be taken lightly. Any kind of water damage is horrible for a car. I want to see more mustangs in good condition on the streets. Or any car for that matter.

Great Idea! I would suggest a junkyard in a wrecked stang with the same carpet in the trunk as yours.

i talked to joe and he said that stereo shops have the stereo carpet in rolls or whatever. i will just head over there next week sometime and by then i will have a paper template of my trunk liner and measurements for the spare tire well.

what type of glue should i use when securing my carpet to the trunk?
