V6 Handling?

Hey all

First post here! Been looking into buying a new stang, probably a pony package 07. I currently own a 1990 Thunderbird SC, and I love the car to death, but its simply too hard to maintain for the amount of driving I will be doing in the near future.

Now, my question is, How well do the newer mustangs handle? What ive always loved about my Bird is that it is one of the best handling cars ive driven, and very comfortable. Will the stang disapoint? Any comment appreciated. Thanks!

well i'm sure you know unlike your t-birds IRS, the 05+ stangs have a 3-lik with a live axle, but with minor modifications they can be setup to handle extremely well for whatever your interested in... drag, autoX, road course. the 79-04 mustangs are a 4-link on a live axle, where as the cobras have the IRS.

Thanks for the reply, 99mustang. I just had another question, whats the difference between the 3 link and the 4 link, in comparison to the IRS? Sorry, the SC is the only car ive had, a little new to the suspension differences and ride differences with the different setups. Any info would be much appreciated!

I love my SC entirely too much to part with it. It will probably turn into a weekend hobby car. The v6 supercharged platform is a TON of fun, and I will probably try to mimic that eventually with a SC for the new stang.

the 3-link has (3) control arms, and the 4-link has (4) control arms. the IRS is heaver but is better for roadcourse where as the 8.8's are great for the dragstrip but can be made to handle with upgraded control arms, springs, shocks and other tuning devices such as swaybar or panhard. a lot of cobra guys will swap back to an 8.8

t-bird IRS:

mustang rear 4-link:

two upper and lower controll arms

cobra irs:

2005+ mustang 3-link:

It has a panhard bar, two lower control arms, and a single upper control arm

Oh ok. Those are great! Thanks for the info. Between my dad and I, we own 3
Thunderbird SCs. One were going to use for a part car (almost a must have for these cars...) And I might have an extra SC engine up for grabs soon. Ill keep you all posted. The engines are amazing though! My dad put a new crate engine in his 5 months ago, and when he pulled the old one (212k miles) it was in great condition. Only reason he pulled it was because of the headgaskets.

as you probably know the supercoupe's supercharger kit will interchange with the top end from the 94-98 v6 single-port mustang and n/a 3.8 thunderbird.

i would sugguest looking for an 03-04 cobra, which is an excellent platform to start modding on, along with that familar IRS
