Shredded cam gear, what caused it?

Okey so both the outermost gear on my cam, and the cam position senor gear have somewhat shredded themselves and i am wondering how this happened. I attached a picture, but i duno if the attachment will work, and its hard to get a good photo. It looks like most of the damage is on the part of the cam gear towards the cam itself. Also how exactly does this gear drive the oil pump as well?

here is anoth picture showing both gears, my thoughts are is that either somehow there is some vibration in the cam, or the oil passage holes are not fully drilled?

Exactly what happened to mine.

Did you ever get a chance to check the oil passage?

no i havent checked the passage yet but i will tonight, i got the heads and everything off i just need to remove the radiator fan so i can pull the cam out. And the timing is not off, it would be possible for the cam position sensor to have been slightly off though. Also the car ran fine for 2 months lets not forget so the the timing couldnt have been off or it wouldnt have lasted this long. I will get better pictures tonight.

Hmmm... well, mine only ran <15 minutes before it destroyed those gears because the passage was non-existant... so I doubt you have ZERO oil flow through the cam passage, but it could still be smaller than it should be, I guess.

well from the pics it looks like just the rear of the gear is destroyed which makes me think either the cam is wobbling or your timing is set funny makeing the cam fall at an uneven duration

It drives the oil pump by a shaft that comes out of the crank position sensor.

I don't know what happened to the gears other than insufficient oil for some reason. Could the cam bearings be bad by any chance resulting in low oil pressure to the gear and possible wobbling?

Yeah, essentially, the CPS gear is on a rod that spins the CPS (at the top of the rod) AND the oil pump (bottom of the rod).

the oil passages look fine and i can blow through the just fine. I could not wobble the cam at all by hand, and yes the majority of the damage does appear to be on the back side of the gear. I am still very confused as to how this happened. all timing marks line up at tdc. There was no oil in the oil filter after running for about thirty seconds with a new oil filter so is it my oil pump?

ok if theres a bad bearing or its not seated correctly or lose
then thats really the only cause to it, there should be NO other reason for it to grind up or get chewed at
