stock gears?


ok i was wondering what are the stock rear end gears in a 1998 v6 mustang?

some v6 came with 3.27:1
many gt's came with 3.27:1
mach 1 came with 3.55:1
and most cobras came with 3.27:1

but a lot of v6 come with 2.73 since they are a marketed economy car.

how would you find out which one you have? that would be interesting to know, i have a 98.

from what i have looked up new edges came with 3.27s and the sn95 rounds had the 2.73s.... and that just cause of the RPM range for both of them

that only works for a 1:1 final drive ratio. our overdrive gears (4th) are a .7 or a .72 ratio... that says that at 3k rpm's and 80 mph i have 2.1:1 ring and pinion set when i have 4.10:1

oh man, well i guess i lost my bet with my dad i told him that i was sure that they were 3.27 and said no i guarantee that they are only 2.73.

question, i got an 01 which i assume has 3.27's how noticable would the increase be when i get the 3.73's? (cant go with 4.10's, I travel a little more than most.)

go with the 4.10s u wouldn't even notice the difference in millage between the 3.73 and the 4.10s i have 4.10s and they were my most noticeable and liked mod.

very noticeable. the gears multiply torque to the wheels, so even the 4.10:1 ratio is noticeably more accelerative than the 3.73:1.

ps i drive 240 miles a week (mostly highway to and from college then to work 4 days a week) and i get 3k rpms at 80mph and get 20mpg on a full bolt on v6. 4.10s arent going to be overkill

p.s.s the acceleration benefits outweigh the mpg loss of maybe 1mpg between the gears

yup. also i get better in town millage then i did with the 3.27

well not right now because i have an open closed loop issue... damn o2 sensors but yah on a properly operating ride. u will get better in town millage and highway will be good
