Well I just looked at KBB and it said $4000. Plus since I would probably trade I could negotiate more.

also, you are from ohio. giving you the benefit of the doubt, say you live in the 6th wealthiest county in america (the richest in ohio) of Hunting Valley Ohio (zip code of 44022) with a mere 284 households with a per capita income of $144,281. you may or may not live here, i dont know.

but then say you have that 1997 ford mustang v6 with ALL the options and 83k miles. you may or may not have ALL the options, i dont know. but say you do.
your car would KBB at $3675 in EXCELLENT condition.

But you claim to have a headgasket problem... So you are at best in FAIR condition and a KBB of $2690

EXCELLENT:
>Looks new, is in excellent mechanical condition and needs no reconditioning.
>Never had any paint or body work and is free of rust.
>Clean title history and will pass a smog and safety inspection.
>Engine compartment is clean, with no fluid leaks and is free of any wear or visible defects.
>Complete and verifiable service records.
>Less than 5% of all used vehicles fall into this category.

FAIR:
>Some mechanical or cosmetic defects and needs servicing but is still in reasonable running condition.
>Clean title history, the paint, body and/or interior need work performed by a professional.
>Tires may need to be replaced.
>There may be some repairable rust damage.

Well I'm in 44333 and KBB knows that, so my rate is better and $4000 is still right. Won't I get a better deal if I'm trading rather than simply selling? Like I can make a deal between selling mine and buying a new one. I think I could get 4000 with negotiation. My dad is pretty good at talking to people. I can't imagine a dealership going way below KBB...it's a pretty standard system.

I just looked at your link and you had a few things wrong, here is what it really looks like
Kelley Blue Book - Select Condition - Ford, Mustang

I think I'm still at good condition. Everything else is in very good shape, new top, new brakes, belts, tires, some suspension. The gasket is the only issue.

yes that may be the only thing but it is a very major thing, that will draticaly bring the cost down.

Well...can I get away with not telling them? The car drives fine...perfectly in fact. The only clues are the disappearing coolant and reservoir debris.

I guess I'll have to see then. My problem is less about money and more about time. I have to have the car paid by college in 6 months so I can only get like a 2500 loan. Oh well something will happen. Thanks for your help.

have you never bought a car before? trading to the dealer is the way to get the LEAST for your car. selling on your own nets you more money but with a trade off of your time and work invested to sell it. you will get more selling yourself than trading

and you are in fair condition. if appraised, you will be in fair by kbb standards because of the head gasket issue. you would be lucky to see 3k for your car.

Yeah I know I will get much more if I sell it on my own, but I will get a better deal if I trade my car for another at a dealership than if I just sell it to the dealership. Selling on my own is a possibility, but from what my parents said I might try to do a trade in.

never sell to the dealership. sell private party or trade it in for a car the dealer owns.

I wouldn't sell it to them.
Do you know a lot about private selling? Is a site like cars.com a good place to start? The demand for mustangs in my area isn't huge, but then again I haven't really tried. Also, I have a time limit and getting the car out of my hands asap is necessary. I can't have it sit around for 2 months waiting to be sold.
That's why I think a trade is my best option. I'm throwing some money away, but I really don't have a choice.
