Turning 16, Considering A 96 V6. Mechanic Said Needs Work

ok, I found a really nice 96 on the side of the road the other day for sale. i called the guy, test drove 20 mins later. Its got 105,000 miles. Very clean, inside and out, engine very clean looking as well. its got an h-pipe. sounds real nice.
I know the guy who owns a toyota dealership in my town. I had the possible seller drive it down to him today. He had his mechanic take a look at it. There was a checklist which i will get tommorow. The owner then spoke with my mother. I guess there are a few things.

-a little play in the steering wheel- new steering shaft he said- $260 i think?

-The exaust pipes i guess will need repair or replacement to pass inspection in april. Is that true?

- Leaking coolant - he said parts cheap, but labor expensive.

3 other leaks.

-Transmission pan gasket

-rear main seal

-front pump seal.

PLEASE TELL ME WHAT YOU THINK ABOUT THIS. I think the mechanic quoted $1600 for everything. is that about right?

The seller was asking $4800. he said that was the blue book value. I looked saw it was 3550 for excellent, 3170 for good. i called and told him this. he then said his new asking price was 3300.

What should I do now?

Keep looking. If you look hard and long you will find a stang in great condition. My son Greg has a 1996 V6 5 speed, 80K miles. He bought it about a month ago. Other than a little bumper fade and headlight haze the car is perfect. He paid $4,200.00. My other son Nick just bought his second stang (first one was totaled) 2000 V6 Auto, 80k miles, $5,400.00. Car is in great shape see his pics. Also if you buy a fixer up you'll never have money for mods.

.He had his mechanic take a look at it.

u said that, if it was his mechanic i wouldnt listen to him about what is wrong with the car if he already lied to u about the blue book, if u dont know anything about cars take it to a mechanic u know or have some1 else look at it and if there is a decent amount of problems when u have some1 look at it then dont pay blue book price if its gunna cost u 2 grand to repair it

and also if u know people who can put in an engine cheap or u could do it urself a mustang with a blown engine is a great deal bought my car and a rebuilt engine and parts etc. coast me about 2000 for my mustang but me and my dad did all the labor to take out old engine and put in new only thing wrong with it is some chipped paint

get split port- 99+ if possible. for the money spent fixing that broken 96, you could have an excellent condition 99 and have 50 more hp and more potential out of the box

I got my 1997 GT for 4700. It's in GREAT condition, never abused, 125,000 mostly highway miles. One owner, new interior, almost perfect paint. Trust me either bring him down to about 3 grand or keep lookin.

for me the main thing was getting low miles.
not everyone keeps there car in good condition or keeps up on the oil changes, air filter changes, etc...plus a car with 100k mile might have same fuel filter, trans flued from day one..

yeah that was the main thing that sold me on my mustang was the little miles, i was going to buy a 6 speed t top firebird before but it had about 75,000 miles on it and it was just about the same price, so it was an easy pick for me

i wanted something i knew would last me awhile if i stuck the money into it, and i dont think i could have found a better car
