Stupid Gear Question...
Okay..here goes...
I bought my stang about 15 months ago... How do I KNOW what gears are in it...the guy before me modified it a bit... BUT now I got an SCT XCAL2 and am wondering if it's tuned correctly... I mean the daeler tuned it but IDK what gears are in it...he undoubtedly used STOCK gear sin the tune...WHAT if I have 3.73 or 4.10's?? WOUld the tune even take..would I KNOW something was up because the car would be acting funny if it had a stock tune gears BUT actually had different than stock... Do I have to get someone to pull them out and look at them?...I really have no idea for an easy way to find this out.. If I DID have other than stock gears it WOULD explain why my cars pretty quick feeling without many mods..BUT on the same token not really happy with my XCAL2 tune that I got today...not much of a diff. made really..so if a stock gear tune was input...could that be why theres no diff. since I got it tuned.. thanks, -Joey |

Umm the only way a tune would be affected by the gearing even remotely would be if it was an auto. Gears make no difference in the tune of a car. The shifts points for an automatic tranny would be the only thing to consider because of gears and even then it wouldn't really affect the tune anyway.

Yes it is an automatic..
So best to order the gears I want 4.10's and PRAY I don't have them in there already...before paying someone to take everything apart to find out...lol |

seems like since the XCAL2 lets you adjust the gears it could affect the tune....right now its set to stock..If I put in gears and left it stock, then changed it on the XCAL tune to the right gears seems it would make a difference...jsut me logically guessing of course..
thanks, Joey |

Found this:
How to check what gears are installed.. This can be checked by dividing the ring gear tooth count by the pinion tooth count (e.g., Ring gear tooth count – 35T, pinion gear tooth count – 10T. 35/10 or 3.50:1 ratio). I'll check the rpm's tomm... I think doing 45 I'm at 1800-2000 maybe..not exactly sure off-hand.. |

65-70 MPH in Drive. RPMs??? This will be around 2500 if I am not mistaken. AB??? Is that right for an auto with 4.10's?

you can ck by putting a piece of tape on the driveshaft and 1 on the wheel. roate the driveshaft while counting the turns it takes to make the wheel turn 1 revolution. if it turns slightly over 4 turns, you have 4.10's, 3 and 1/2 would be 3.55's, and so on. Also, most all ring gears and the rear of the pinion are marked w/ the ratio but removal of the rear cover is required.
