engine stumbles in drive and not in park!!!

My mustang starts up perfect but when i put it into reverse or drive it revs up to 1500 rpm and then back down to 800 to 900 rpm. but if i go to mash the peddle down it starts to sputter really bad and slowly start to go. i have changed then coil pack, plugs, wires, air filter and mass air flow sensor and still the same problem. but i smell a weird burning type of smell when i get out of my car that seems like its coming from my cats, could my cats be clogged? should i gut them and see what happens then? please help i have only had this car for about 2 months and have had nothing but problems, its a 2002

thanks

joey
