WTF Emissions!

Thinking to start a helpful thread on emissions here, because I know I had problems with them at first. I'm thinking more of a research thread than anything, because I know people are always having issues with this. I have looked all over the TX DMV site, and am about to start calling around, but this is all I have found so far:

http://www.dmv.org/tx-texas/smog-check.php

It's only listen certain counties as smog-checkable. I live in Bell County, one of the ones NOT listed.. would it be safe to assume that I'd be okay with an offroad pipe? So, I called around to the shops about here. I advise you to do this in your state. Currently, non-smogcheck counties Texas require only three things, via visible inspection ONLY:

1) Catalytic Converters
2) Mufflers
3) Pipes run all the way to the rear.

After that, you're all good!

(PS: This means I can get long-tube headers!)

Call and find out if you need catalytic converters in your county. Also, make sure long tube headers will not fail a visual inspection. In some places, you can have a smog-friendly setup with cats, but the long tubes will fail at visual.

that would be a YES. That is a federal mandate, not a state one.

I have yet to get a ticket for no cats, and most people in my area that modify trucks and American cars run no cats- no tickets. Not even a fix-it ticket. If it isn't regularly inspected, there is no fret. You will have to do something stupid to be pulled over and have a cop check for cats in a non-emissions testing county.

I just got my car inspected and pass without running my smog pump. I always thought if you had no cats you would get in trouble and not pass an inspection. I am going to have look into it.

South Carolina - We did away with the inspections about 8 years ago.

here in va, they are required for state inspection. We can issue a rejection sticker for no converters. As for the enforcement, most states don't really care but I know here in Va, they will ticket you for improper exhaust in a heartbeat.

If your inspections are simply visual, you can weld in a straight pipe inplace of the cats, with the shell of a cat around it. gives the looks of a cat.
