Custom Turbo Setup

Okie here's the scoop, I have a 97 pony with a 3.8. It has 132k miles on it. I rebuilt the top end 7k ago. I want to put a turbo on it. I work at a salvage yard owned by my family so I can get a turbo off of a junk car for mega cheap. I was thinking about a small Subaru Legacy turbo, but I'm no expert, and my car does have a lot of miles on it. This is my daily driver, and I don't want a 300hp monster that gets 17mpg, but I do want a little more power. I'll save the gas guzzling fun for my 65

Thanks, you're always helping me out man. What cars do I get a T3 off of?

... your not going to find one in a junk yard, you might be able to get some power out of a GT35 (size ish wise) turbo, but they are made for smaller cars... like the legacy turbo... if it comes of a 3.0 then you might have some room left to make it work but i highly doubt it...

... my advise, don't scape out on the turbo, if you wanna do cheap then do home made headers and shit but the turbo is going to be where you want to invest your money, you can get a nice one for maybe $500-800 on the internet, search forums and talk to people, you might be able to snag something off of a WRX sti (used) or something like that ya know?

but i seriously doubt that the legacy turbo will be beneficial at all... do you know what kinda turbo it is?

17 MPG...My stang currently gets 18.6 MPG. However, I have a 93 octane performance tune + a lead foot. You know a Z06 gets 26mpg! I don't know a lot of cars that come stock with a T3. Maybe a Mercedes? Plus, the turbo itself is a little less than half the expense of going turbo. The pipes required and the intercooler will add to the expense as well. IDK...chris you must have something to say about all this.

I don't know what the legacy turbo is exactly, I just know it's not big enough to blow my engine. I really don't want to spend $800.00. Would a Supra Turbo work? Those are bigger. You would be surprised the shit that comes in, I could probably steal one off of a 2001+ Eclipse or maybe a WRX. Edit: I also plan on modifying the exhaust as well, and as far as pipes go, I'm sure I could make a custom turbo kit. I can also get an intercooler for like 40 bucks. This is my family... My uncle sold me a garret for 20 bucks. I don't know what it was, but it had to be worth 20 bucks ;P

I suggest doing some research, find out what kinda turbos come through and what kinda power they are capable of... then go from there, if you can find something you like that can produce enough flow to help your 3.8 rather then choke it up then go for it, from there, piping isn't to big of a deal, you will just have to worry about tuning and fuel

Alright, I'll look into some turbos that are fitted on cars around my same displacement and research them a bit.

Yeah you're gonna want to find something that produces between 6-8 psi. That is the safe range on the stock engine.

indeed you are, when you find a turbo you like, make sure you grab the manifold it came off of, and also to make your like a little easier the piping right after the turbo and the piping leading into the turbo, that way you don't have to go searching for flanges and shit later on

How about sharing the wealth...Can you get me a 94-04 GT complete 8.8 rear end w/posi in good condition for $350 or less after shipping to VA? I don't need the brakes...but I do need everything else.

Actually I probably could get find you a 8.8 for 350 bucks, however the whole Virgina thing is going to bump that price up . I'm mega cheap and I build everything myself. When I built my computer I only put 600 dollars into it, and at the time alienware computers of equal performance were going for 2500 bucks. I hate spending money and I can be mega patient. I know how to do foundry, so I could grab the maifold, torch it, and modify it to fit the back of my headers. Maybe I'm being a bit clueless, but what I'm going to want to do is attach the turbo to the end of my headers before my O2 sensor, and then run my exhaust (which I plan on modifying into catless dual, no emissions in Weld County), then I'm going to want to run my Air cleaner to the turbo, and the turbo to my throttle body, right? Simple enough? I'm sure it's got to be more complex then that, but live and learn Lookie Is that turbo worth the money? Stage 4 and all. Is it to big? You can snag a t3 off of saab 900's. They are small turbos and its better if you went with 2 of them. They are more of an "economy" turbo, but a lot of v6 guys used them to make twin turbo kits for them.

Sweet, I come across those Saabs all the time! On another note, I found four identical turbos in a car today. I'll upload pictues in a few. They are Holset HE351Ve. They're mega huge though.
