Manually Downshifting On a Auto...

Is it bad to do it? I do it fairly often when Im racing from a roll.

Im just guessing, and learning but, I mean I guess it cant be to HARD/BAD for it cause you have a thing that over rides it (in most cars to my knowledge newer ones tho) that if you go past a certain RPM it will shift for you

But if your downshifting long as your not going 70 in 2nd gear, I guess it cant be to bad?

sorry i dont really know a whole lot about autos just put a jmod so u can hammer shift it lol

No, it's fine so long as your not putting the motor into redline when you do it.

uhh no so much wrong info,

NEVER EVER EVER downshift a 4r70w unless you have a shift kit built for it. I mean NEVER. upshifting is ok but im surprised you still have a tranny

Yea I dont do that, I had a manual Nissan 200sx before this car so Im not a shifting retard lol. This car would be a manual too if it where up to me but my mom gave my mustang to me so the price was right on this one lol.

AHHHHHHHH!!!!! Thats not what I wanted to hear! You dont think ive done any damage to it do you? What if I got a J-Mod?

still dude dont downshift it your tranny will not hold up to it, in essence youll starve the TC and end up running it like it has no fluid in it

I would do a tranny flush your probably grinded your gears a bit. Get a j-mod and that will ramp up the pressure enough( a tuner will help too) and you'll be good

well it matters the car the 4r70w just doesnt hold line pressure on a down shift well. Its not good for any car really but some can handle it some cant

+1..NEVER NEVER NEVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! If you're not happy with how your car shifts. Get a shift kit, a j-mod, and an XCAL!

What about when I floor it and the car automaticly downshifts? How is it any different?

the computer is telling it to shift
its not being forced
thats the difference. if your being told its ok to jump in the water the sharks wont bite then you'll do it
if your thrown in there. your gonna be pissed

i have had my 03 for a year and a half. I manually shift it using 1-2-d every day, constantly. I never just put it in drive. Sometimes I even put it in 2 from like 65ish mph to help get stopped. I never downshift into first, though, because it downshifts too hard.

of course I wouldn't have been doing this had I known it was harmful to the tranny...

but a year and half and NO problems...
