you dont need to change the oil then, thats just to break the gears in before you get on em hard. if you get on em hard early then there could be a chance of gettin an unsusal wear pattern which could bring problems

technically the oil should be changed too tho...just incase anything came off the gears and such during the break in period

Yeah man congrats
. I wish I could f@#$ing get mine done already . I have the gears sitting in my room. I have the install kit on the way (I wish I had ordered from AM but I ordered from a site the HMUSN recommended and they took a LONG time to ship!). My problem is that I'm also upgrading to 8.8 and it really is hard as shit to find a good 8.8 rear for a reasonable price. This has been a PITA. But it will have been worth the trouble when I have over 300 HP. However, for now it is just a PITA. It also costs at least twice as much as gears and t-lok for the 7.5 .

Actually AM charged like $20 less for their kit plus shipping would have been free. But don't feel bad Doc, you have still been my best source of advice on all of MM. And I can't thank you enough for all of that help.
all bow before the great HMUSN .

Everyone says there's a break in period, but every shop I have talked to around here and guys that have done gear installs themselves have said there is no need to "break them in"

the gears need to be broken in so that they get any contaminants off them and get a wear pattern and such

i think it also helps them harden or somethin along those lines bc of how hot the oil gets and then letting it cool and such for the first 500 miles
edit: In order to make them run cooler and quieter, new gears are lapped at the factory. However, they are not lapped under the same pressures that driving creates. The loads generated while driving, force any microscopic high spots on the gear teeth back into the surface of the metal. This is called "work hardening". Work hardening is similar to forging in the way that it compresses the metal molecules into a very compact and hard formation. This can only be accomplished if the metal surfaces are lubricated and the gear temperature stays cool enough that the molecular structure does not change. If the temperature of the metal gets hot enough to change the molecular structure, it will soften the surface instead of hardening it. This may seen like a balancing act but it all happens easily & passively as long as the oil keeps the gear cool while it is breaking in. Some of the synthetic oils on the market today can help a gear set live longer.

i think ill go ahead and "break em in" for about 500 miles... take it easy on them then change the oil just to be safe... its 45 bucks that could be cheap insurance for later so why not
