An 8.8" ring gear will not fit in your axle housing. To run an 8.8" you'll need the entire axle assembly. You can reuse your axle shafts and brakes as long as the rear end housing is from a 99-04 car cuz they are the same for a 8.8 and 7.5. You can use a fox body 8.8 but you will need to use 94-98 axle shafts and brakes. You can also use a 94-98 8.8 but yet again you'll need all the 94-98 stuff. The fox body and 94-98 axle housings are the same but the axles are longer cuz the 94-98 cars have disc brakes. 99-04 cars have longer axles than the 94-98 cars and they also have a longer axle housing. You can use any 8.8" rear as long as you have the right brakes and axles. If you find an 8.8 rear from a Thunderbird Turbo Coupe or Lincoln Mark VII you can use that cuz its the same as the 94-98 Mustang rearend. The Turbo Coupes came with 3.55 or 3.73 gears depending on what tranny they had. I dont know what the Lincolns had. Both cars had rear disc brakes. All 8.8's have 28 spline axles unless its from an Explorer. Explorers had 31 spline axles but you cant use the axle shafts or the rear end housing, its all wrong. You can use the 31 spline Trac Lok unit and the gears. If you use the 31 spline Trac Lok you will need 31 spline axles. Some Explorers had 3.73's, I dont remember which ones though. You can pretty much use any 8.8 from a CAR, NO TRUCK 8.8's!!!!

you said i could pretty much use any 8.8 from a car, you said any but throughout that entire post im hearing stuff that i would have to interchange.
what about just grabbing the spider gears out of the rear differential? what kind of cars out there would have the right spider gears to fit in the 02? almost all of the cars out there were 98 through 85. so if anything in that range works then thats my best bet. |

thats okay but you will have to redo the brakes i believe. I think crown vics havedrums and you need discs. I dunno about the police interceptors though

im not interested in your opinion on if i need an 8.8, all i need is for a rear end that will fit the mustang, the price for both 7.5 and 8.8 is the same at my junkyard so why get an oem type when i could get the upgrade.
leave opionions like that to yourself it only aggravates this entire situation of having to find one. |

okay, new plan, since its so hard to find an 8.8, what year cars have the same size spider gear size? were just gonna take those out of the cars at lkq (our local junkyard). then were just put those back in there, spider gears is all he needs so mine as well.
can i get a small list of what cars between 91 and 98 have the same size spider gears? what does /thread mean? |

any car you have named minus an explorer will work, and getting used spider gears will make so much chatter its not worth it, just pull one out of a crown vic or mustang and make it fit

ok, couldnt find anthing in the junkyard at all, literally nothing, so i have a new plan i want to see what you guys think, i have a traction lock in my room i havent used yet, if i took my rear diff off and tried to put my traction lock in, i could just give him my open diff thats in there right?

I was gonna ask that same question.
Because 95% of the people who want them and are going to do this and that later... never happends. Just check back in threads.

why bother posting opinions on something that is not the topic? go discuss that in the clubhouse,
all i need to know is if it would be smart to take out my open diff and put in my traction lock and hand over my open diff from my car to the broken car. |
