wind resistance and mpg

Is it possible rolling the windows down while driving over 55 affects the car in a negative way when pertaining to MPG? I assume that driving insanely fast will add a lot of resistance with the windows rolled down, but would it matter if I was going around 65-70?

I think they covered this on mythbusters. Having the windows down actually does effect MPG. However, you are better off with the windows down than you are with the AC on. However, if you don't mind being hot keeping the windows up will help your MPG.

Interesting side note for anyone who owns a truck...mythbusters also found that driving with your tailgate closed actually gives you better MPG than with it open!

It's also important to mention that it would be foolish to ASSUME that every car reacts the same way to rolling the windows down or that every truck responds the same way to having the tailgate up or down.

But yes, your aero will definitely be compromised with the windows down...

And your drag coefficient has a HUGE influence on gas mileage at higher speeds

I'm pretty sure by what I saw on mythbusters that all pickup trucks will get better gas mileage with the tailgate closed.

Yes having the windows down affects MPG, but like stated above.....having the windows down is better than having the AC on as far as MPG is concerned. And convertibles are just as bad with the top down.....the wind create turbulence in the back seat area. So unless you have a toneau cover and roll you windows up when you have the top down....yur in no better situation than anyone with a coupe.

would you get less mileage by having both windows down or 1 window down and other 1 uup at high speeds? haha
