I would guess into your ecu.

However you should probably get a hand held tuner.

you need to get it removed and the car flashed back to stock

because a chip taps into your ECU, where a tuner reflashes it. With a chip if you want to change your tune you have to pay a tuner 500 bucks to reflash it. you need to change a tune with a tuner you simply modify the file and reflash. The tuner also saves your stock tune so you can always go back to factory tuning

it matters if the chip has the stock tune stored in it, or if it is set up to return to stock if removed. if you can find out the brand it will help

Ok...first GET A TUNER NOT A CHIP. The chip does go into your ecu (pasenger side kick panel) However, you should know, if you put one of those chips in that you can't use a tuner. Now for the umteen millionth time the reasons why a tuner is better than a chip. With a tuner you can data log and get your tune perfectly customized to your car. With a chip you have to settle for a "canned tune" With a tuner when you get new mods you can get a new custom tune to take full advantage of that new mod(if you get your tuner from tricktuners then this is free for 2 years). With a chip you have to take the chip out and send it in and pay a shit ton of money to reflash it if you get a new mod(and after all that the tune still won't be as good as one that has been data logged and perfected). Tuners can read and clear DTCs. Chips of course can't. If you get an SCT livewire you can use it as an in dash gauge that will give you all kinds of information like AF ratio and boost. There are no chips with that ability. With a tuner you have the option to quickly and easily restore your car to the stock tune. You can't do that with a chip. The only thing that some of the better chips can do that a tuner can't is change tunes on the fly. However that requires a bunch of extra hardware and costs a lot more money. With a tuner you can still store multiple tunes, it just takes a few minutes to switch between them. BTW with either the chip or the tuner you will need to find the code on you ecu. However, unless your have an OBD I instead of an OBD II you should always get a tuner over a chip. Oh I almost forget a lot of dyno tuners require you to have a handheld tuner in order to get a dyno tune.

Actually, if you're willing spend the money I would go with the SCT livewire. but the xcal 2 or 3 are also excellent choices.

Ok..click the link in my sig and start reading cuz that's gonna teach you a whole lot. Basically some tuners you give a list of mods and they just send you a "canned tune". It's gonna be an ok tune for what you got, but won't be as good as it could be. If you have a custom tuner, they send you a tune for the mods you have. Then you data log that tune and send them the results. they then tweak and perfect the tune to get the absolute best possible results for your particular goal and for your particular car. The process is repeated until the tune is perfect for your car. You can get different types of tunes depending on your goals. For example you can get a tune that will maximize your fuel economy or get a tune that will maximize power. Or get one that is a good blend of the two. Any time that you get a new mod or mods, you tell your custom tuner what you did and he adjusts your tune to compensate for it. You then data log and perfect the tune again. If you get your tuner from the site in my sig then you will get as many free custom tunes as you want for 2 years. After that you can pay $40 and get another 2 years of unlimited custom tunes. Anywhere else you will have to pay for each custom tune...but even then it is a WHOLE LOT cheaper and easier than getting a chip reflashed. If you have any more questions check out that link. You can also feel free to PM me.
