gas pedal "lurching" from stop, etc.

Hi--
I have a 2007 Mustang 6 cyl 210 HP. When I accelerate from a dead stop at a traffic light or stop sign, the engine "lurches" forward. There is a lot of play in the gas pedal, and then when it engages it "grabs" quickly and the car surges forward quite abruptly.

This is a nuisance in city driving, but it was absolutely dangerous last week when I was driving in the mountains on a winding road. When I hit the gas pedal going uphill (as gravity slowed me down, of course) it would lurch forward quite a lot when the pedal did engage. I could barely control the car, even with downshifting, etc.

I almost went over the side of a 3000 ft cliff!

I took the long way home from the Trinity Alps, avoiding mountain roads where I would be on the side of the road with the drop-off.

Has anyone else experienced this pedal play and "lurching" when you push down on the pedal?

The Ford dealer said it was "normal" for this electronic throttle system. Normal???!!! What a joke!!

Any experiences like this out there??

take your pedal assembly out... if its that same as the GT's, its basically just a switch that decrease resistence when you push it down.. sounds like you have a problem with your actaul pedal assembly

Onemanzu--The dealer won't fix it, they said it was "normal".

qwik48r--sorry, I don't know much about working on cars.

I did take it to my usual mechanic, who also said it could not be adjusted at all. So it may be different than GT's.

Next step is a complaint with the NHTSA and a case under the CA "Lemon Law."

qwik48r---Well, you just about have the verbatim quote I gave them! The service mgr. said he'd contact Ford, but basically he said that according to their diagnostic tests it was "normal" so they could not do anything.

I think Ford will just figure that if someone dies from it, there is really no way to know this was the cause of the problem, as all the tests will show "normal".

But as with your sentiments, I'm not accepting that, thus the official complaints with the NHTSA and under the CA Lemon Law.

I was just curious if any V6 owners have the same throttle problem, and to let them also know to be careful on mountian roads if they do need to use them.

dealerships are incredible... one second, they want you to be happy with your purchase... the next, they want to call you a liar..

my wife has a 07 civic si which i bought new in 07.. paid cash outright 23,000 otd.... 30,000 miles later, it needs a new transmission and clutch (as did MANNNNY other honda six speeds..) it was a problem...for everyone... of course they had never heard of it and would never pay for a new transmission... so what did we do? first i contact Honda Of America, told them my dealership was incompitent and i demanded a leazion. i got what i wanted.. next, i complied a 3" binder full of PROOF of the 3rd gear problem and plopped it down on the service managers desk, looked him square in the eyenuts and told him "we dont want this to be taken any further than you do... do we, William? (his name)"

he got on the phone with honda 5 minutes after i left, called me back to the dealership almost immediately and apologized... the next day, my leazion called and told me a new 3rd gear synchro assembly and gear set were on the way. car was fixed in 2 days free of charge (had to buy a clutch which is a destructive component only warrented for 12,000 miles) was not mad about that at all!!!!! car is perfect now and my wife is happy....

dont NOT be scared of getting reaaaaaalllly gruff with these people. fuck them, your the customer and the customer is ALWAYS right. Damnit

So what i am getting here is that there is a dead space so when you hit the gas and having that dead space is throwing off your driving a bit?

If that's what it is,this is a known complaint with these v6 stangs. Some appear to have it andsome don't.Like qwik48r mentioned, although i am not sure it is the same assembly exactly, the pedal assembly sounds responsible.I have performed a mod that makes it much better.I will look for the link.It seems complex but its not.Lol,i have a spare pedal assy just in case something goes whacko on me.It was only 43$ from memory...

well there is a difference between lurching and slack in the line... if its just slack in the line you need to just learn to coupe with it until your pedal assembly gets lose and weak and just rests where it is suppose to

if its a mechanical problem where the car is actually jumping 2-3 feet when ever you touch the pedal then take it in

Heh,i even had a pic of mine,lol.

There are tiny little brushes that are moved up and down rubbing on those areas you can tell where. The theory is,mm,bend the brushes a tad so they are more sensitive to pedal movement.Still looking..although maybe this is'nt the deal with you.

Hi all--
Well, it's both. There is a lot of play in the pedal. I have gotten a bit used to this, and ride it a bit "heavy" at a light, stop sign, etc. This is a nuisance. But then it still lurches ahead when it grabs and goes. And that is the real danger.

I am taking this all the way through the courts if needed. Thanks for the feedback.

Bandit--you said this is a known problem with V6 mustangs---any links to other complaints? It would sure help!

Thanks for that link Bandit. That does explain the "play" in the pedal. But it would still "lunge" when it caught, at least in this car.

So, we'll see how this all pans out, "Raro vs. Ford Motor Co."
