Over Drive...

So I just got into a debate with my shop about the overdrive in my stang. It's an AODE tranny from a 95 mustang. Original one in the car, and all maintenance work done and so on. But i wanna know about that O/D button on the side of the shifter. Last I checked it turns off the overdrive setting, but he said I should never turn it on unless I'm above 60. I was thinking, if that's the case why would the Overdrive Off show up with the CEL and Check Battery lights? I was under the impression that with this transmission it was always supposed to be on? Anyone know one way or the other?

it should a lways be on unless youre towing a heavy load which will probly never occur with your mustang

or if you are going uphill at a speed that it keeps shifting between 3rd and the overdrive thus overworking the trans

yea, overdrive is just the last gear, and you should only shut it off if, like 04dsgv6 said, your tranny keeps shifting between third and od up a hill. If your crusing around at like 35, your car will shift into overdrive while driving at a constant pace, ie no hills or heavy pedal pressure. It saves you gas and at 4 dollars a gallon, id tell that doosh he needs to find a new profession.

what overdrive does is change your ratio to 1:1.

The guys are right... Leave OD on always. The only exception I could think of with a mustang would be in a moutainous area with lots of hills and valleys. For sure turn it off in those areas. A tranny that keeps trying to shift to OD going up a hill will over heat and KILL the trans!

HA!!! I fucking knew it! I'm totally getting reimbursed for the tranny work they did without my go ahead....

Stupid car still being in my mother's name despite her selling it to me. I'm lazy.... I should change the paperwork though. ^_^

What kills the auto trans with OD is it shifting repeatedly heating up the trans. In a manual, its simple. Just do not shift repeatedly back and forth, I sincerely doubt you will be changing gears on an incline anyways.
