so what exactly does a boring the engine do? What are the benefits of it and how much would it cost to get it done?

Boring the engine out consists of taking material off the sides of the cylinder block walls in order to achieve larger displacement by using larger sized pistons. This would equate to more cubic centimeters per cylinder (cc's) and thus more horsepower. You would have to strip the engine down to isolate and remove the cylinder block in order to have it taken to a shop and bored out. As for cost, that depends on how much of the work you do yourself to strip the top end of engine down. Probably looking at several hundred to bore out a stripped cylinder block. Then you would need to buy new pistons, rings, wrist pins, etc. And depending on your horsepower goals you might want to buy stronger rods as well. The whole setup can definately get costly with labor and everything. Might be anywhere between $1k and $2k depending on quality of parts used in the top end rebuild.

Boring and honing is not usually done to increase power, though it will increase it slightly. It is normally done to correct worn cylinders.

im surprised they didn't use one of those stress plates or w.e on the top to apply normal cylinder head pressure to the block... this is said to increase accuracy and life of a block...

boring is also considered a "clean start" for an older used engine... it helps eliminate imperfections in the cylinder walls and what not
