Manual/clutch question

Ok so i have been wondering this for awhile now.......

when i am stopped i just put it neutral. I was wondering if it is hard on the clutch to hold the clutch completly in when stopped? Knowing this would help a lot in stop and go traffic. Thanks!

I've been wondering the same...I've heard that its not good to hold in the clutch as it decreases the life of it. I just put it in neutral when im stopped just in case

okay... lets see

say your at a stop light... lights red and your sitting there... you can either disengage the clutch and leave it in a gear, this is tiresome on your leg and supposedly can decrease the life of your clutch... cause it has the chance of rubbing a tiny bit... things like that...

or you can put the car in neutral and engage the clutch... this is easy on your leg and can't possibly wear out your clutch as much

your choice...

Holding the clutch in at stoplights will wear down the throwout bearing. You'll eventually hear that wonderful squealing sound of the TOB.

What about holding the clutch in while in gear sitting at a stop waiting?

Thats what we are talking about....because if you were out of gear there is no reason to hold the clutch in anyway

its best to leave it in neutral
the only thing your really going to wear out is your throw out bearing

The only way you'll wear our your clutch from sitting still is if you dont have it fully disengaged, in that case it will be slightly rubbing and wearing it out, now you could wear out your throw out bearing but that'll take a while. Just keep it in neutral.

Do you guys downshift through most of the gears ( except 1st ) while coming to a stop? Or do you neutral then brakes? I usually use a couple of gears to slow down, but nothing crazy like over 4,000 rpms.

The only time i downshift is when i want to pass someone. But when coming to a stop, i press in the brake with no clutch then once i get to around 1K RPM's i put in the clutch till im stopped, then go to neutral and release the clutch

Same for me. The only other time I downshift is if I know the stoplight will turn green before I get there.

I always downshift, and keep it under 2500 rpms when downshifting.

As for the original question, just put it in neutral. This way you don't have to worry about wearing the throwout bearing, your leg won't get tired during those long cruise sessions, and if something were to startle you your car wouldn't lurch forward if you slipped or jumped off the clutch pedal.
