Good price for a GT rear end?

local craigslist post is selling a full GT rear end "from e brake line to calipers" for $500. Good price if I'm looking to swap mine out for 8.8 and 3:73?

I have to ask why? If you aren't over 300hp, the 7.5 should be good. Brace it, gear it, TL it and run it. I ran a 350hp 2.3 turbo on a 7.5 for years and never had a failure. The trans gave (over and over again- thank God they were cheap), but the rear held. Not to mention they are 25# lighter unsprung weight, and have less reciprocating mass to spin.
Sorry, I don't know your whole plan so excuse this if it's out of line. Just my .02

I think most people just want to get an 8.8 rear end because its easier, the t-lok is already in there and gears would be the only thing they would have to buy, (besides the obvious dont shoot me down just yet) but also because the 8.8 can be a DIY thing, gears can wait till you have the money, you have a 7.5 rear end with a traction lock and your gears at home you have to save money up to put them, damn sure dont want to do that yourself (trust me) 8.8 just seems to be easier.

I did an 8.8 conversion and the rearend I bought the axles were bent as bad my original. Good thing is I paid 250 and even with 300 dollar axles is still cheaper than new.

First off, if it is in good condition, GET THE REAR END!!! I have been trying really hard to find a good one for like 6 months now. I have the gears I have the install kit. I'll be getting the axles and differential for a good price. Now I'm trying to find the housing. Shipping on rear ends is soooooo high that you're gonna want to get one local. If the one the guy is selling is in good condition....BUY IT! Cuz you might not find another one in your area for awhile. $500 for the whole thing is a pretty good price. It certainly isn't too good to be true. However, I agree that unless you have big HP plans for the future you should stick with the 7.5. It is MUCH cheaper and easier to get gears and a t-lok for you current rear end than it is to get an 8.8. You only need the 8.8 if you plan on over 300HP.
