break pedal squeek - higher shifter

When pressing on the break pedal I get a squeek as if someone was walking across an old rickety wood floor. What is causing that and how do I fix it?

ALSO

I have an automatic. I want to get a higher shifter. What is involved in that? Tired of having to reach for it all the time. Just want to rest my forearm on the center console with my hand on the shifter and cruise. And what's that button on the side???

Thanks.

Just curious, if you have an automatic, why do you need to keep your hand on the shifter? You really shouldn't be shifting that often. In fact you can really mess up your tranny if you're not at a complete stop when you shift. If you want to be shifting while driving you need to get a manual.
